I got some cans of Jai Alai last fall in a trade and really enjoyed it, it had a nice orange/pineapple thing going on along with the unique Simcoe dry hopping. I've been hoping to get more sometime this summer and when I saw that Universal Fine Wine & Spirits was running a free shipping special on beer, I decided to get a sixer. This time Jai Alai seems really different, not as fruity, much more bitter, and before it was very hazy and these ones are very clear. It actually kinda tastes a bit like one of those oranges you get sometimes that's too acidic. They were canned on 5/16 which makes them a bit old but they are the same age as the ones I had last fall that I enjoyed. Anybody know if the way they make it changed at all?

I can say that it was a little "off" for a few months back then. I went through a case in June and it was spot on...

Yeah, noticed the same thing a couple months ago. Not a freshness issue as the ones I had were less than a week old. Seem to back to normal though.

There was a hiccup; not sure what caused it but something was definitely off. No longer a problem, thankfully.

Cool, I'll make sure to give it another chance sometime.

I picked up a 6 pack last night and thought I was crazy because I didn't think it tasted right. Very bitter, no fruity juiciness, and very clear. Canned date 7/15/2014.

Well that would be your problem right there.

It's too old for Jai Alai. If you can't get anything fresher than 2 weeks it's really not that great. Yours is almost a month.

Invasion has the same problem. Both beers fall way too quickly. I made the mistake of buying a 6-pack of Invasion two days ago and it was $7.99 because it's 3+ weeks old and they wanted it gone. It's pretty bad but I'll drink it.

I don't know about that, I've been drinking plenty that are a month+ old and they hold up just fine. This sixer just tasted completely different

You regularly drink month+ old IPA's?

Not regularly but I do a lot of trades, and many have a month+ on them... A 6+% ABV beer shouldn't degrade in a mere 4 weeks....sure fresh is better, but a month is nothing.

At Brew Hub in Lakeland right now, just tasted the Jai Also...the juiciness is there...maybe the 6er I bought got too hot or something.

Why do most people think IPA's magically expire after X time? I mean, I see a bit of the juiciness drop off but it's still a good beer. I drank a 2 year old jai alai the other day and it was delicious!

Cigar City isn't exactly the best when it comes to consistency, to be honest.

It's not the month old beer that is the problem, nor consistency IMO. I posted a very similar thread and it comes down to your pallet, or what you ate prior to the beer. Don't believe me? Have a Jai Alai before dinner. Have a Jai Alai after dinner, big difference depending on what you ate.

I'll admit sometimes a beer can taste off due to your palate or something you ate. However when an entire 6 pack tastes off, in the same way, drank on separate days, it is the beer and that's what I noticed with Jai Alai.

cigar city recently hired new guys to handle the jai alai production. they promised ccb they would put in 1500 oz of hops in each new batch. they did not. cigar city is not happy but will correct the issue.

    too soon?

as an olive branch, im drinking a jai alai as i type this right now. mmmm
