Did we ruin Bourbon County?

I waited in line at the Plainfield Binny's. Got there around 5:45 and left around 10. I "only" got reg, coffee (barely), and barleywine. I had brought 2 members of my visiting family to triple the allotment I would receive. Had I received a full allotment x3 I'd be beaming with joy. Now, I'm thinking that maybe this has become something that I'm not proud of. I seriously dragged people out of bed on a holiday to triple my allotment by using them as mules. It gets better...

After that, I went to a liquor store that gets BCBS every year. It was about 11:30. He had reg and BW behind the counter but said that he wouldn't sell it until 5. I decided I wasn't going... until 4 o'clock rolled around and I grabbed someone else to go with me since I had nothing better to do. We got there and found out that we had to buy a 2013 Lolita in order to be allowed to purchase a regular and a BW- all for $44. We waited until 5 and both bought our allotment. Starting to hate myself more, but wait, it gets better...

Saturday rolls around, and I decide to stop somewhere in the Joliet area on my way out shopping with my visiting family. I asked about variants, the guy asks what I want, and after some persistence, he offers me a Rare for $170 and a Prop for $80. He tried to get me to pay $300 total for those 2 and a coffee, but I talked him down to $230 with no coffee. I PAID IT.

Looking back now, I'm not sure that I'm happy that I did it. Honestly, $230 isn't the craziest amount I've ever spent on beer-related adventures, but the explicit price gouge that I encouraged should not be tolerated. I'm embarrassed, because I realized that I was part of the problem that is bothering me so much.

Thoughts anyone? Have we ruined Bourbon County, the beer that really put BA beers on the map? Also, why is this most prevalent in the Chicago area? I have friends that live all over the country, and in some cities, reg is just sitting on the shelves for $9-11. Here, I've seen it for $16, and I've also seen a place force me to buy other GI products in order to get it. (The most recent: 2 reg and a 12-pack of GI Oktoberfest for $41.)

This seems it may be more an issue of self control...

Yikes. That's a sad Thanksgiving tale. There's better, more accessible beers out there. Stop chasing. Start enjoying.

No we havent ruined Bourbon County you are just stupid. Showed up at 2am to Naperville Binnys with my SO bout two full allotments including Rare with no ridiculous mark up. Home Happy. Hell you could have gone to LP Binnys at 9am and still bought full allotments.

The interesting question is what us consumers will continue to do for different beers. For example, I have given up on dark Lord day after 2013. Had gone for 4 years, but it wasn't fun, enjoyable or worth the cost anymore. In the past month, there have been 4 barrel beer releases in Cincinnati. As there are more barrel aged releases, I assume there will be more general availability, making it easier to get great beer . we'll see Whether craft beer customers are going to continue to fight tooth and nail for releases or whether the hype will fade and these beers will just go back to shelf turds.

I'd refuse to pay more than the $60-70 tag for rare or $10 for reg at a retail store. Total Wine and all the other stores I know of (or went to) in the south didn't do any "you have to buy this too garbage." Yes, you're feeding it.

There was a post I saw about hype is the cause why someone would kill you over a pair of sneakers. Don't think it's the same with beer but it probably the fuel to the fire that will make people do things that they would not usually do. Not saying that people shouldn't get excited over things but maybe just set up a cut off point so it won't get out of hand. On the other hand if you truly enjoy the beer and can't enough of it and it's not motivated by hype then I don't think it's wrong.

I just don't get it... It's beer, its not going to pay your rent, help your retirement or get your rocks off... Maybe it's just me, but my time is way to valuable to spend more than 10, maybe 15 minutes waiting for a beer. Yes, no matter how rare or good its perceived. But I'm clearly in the minority.

    Didn't bother with it.

Went to my local shop, bought some Ballast Point since it had just released in Michigan, saw the tag on the regular and said no way

I'd say the best beer you bought this weekend is the 2013 Lolita.

Yea. It's gotten kind of dumb.
If you come across it sure, even with some effort. But have noticed a good deal of disillusionment with the BCBS rush this year.

I got 4 bottles total; 2 each from bottle shops I am a preferred customer. Other than that I did not chase, nor will I do so in the future, I love BCB but am totally turned off by the hype, the craziness and the hoarding.

This post gave me the willies. So much money, so much time, so much bad juju in dragging your family with you to feed your "hobby" (addiction?). I have up on special releases a while ago. They make me cringe with anxiety, irritation, and guilt, and aren't worth the score.

Like my buddy told over a year ago: start crafting your own cocktails that will be the next big thing once craft beer isn't "cool" anymore...

I didn't mind waiting this year. I got in line about 6 for a store opening at 9. I was able to talk beer for a few hours with the guys in front of me which was cool and made the time go by fast. In the end, I was only able to purchase one bottle of regular and one variant (I chose the coffee). What made it worth it though, was also being able to buy 2- 12 oz bottles each of 2013 and 2014 regular and had my choice between a Bells Black Note or Perennial Sump. I chose the Sump.

You spent $230 on a Prop and a Rare? Congratulations, you just became that guys new favorite customer.

PT Barnum is laughing his ass off in his grave right now.
