I know I'm going to bring out the people who swear they don't drink for the buzz, but I believe most of us do. Since hops are related to cannibas, and different strains of pot give different highs, I'm wondering if certain beers/ hops give you a prefered buzz. I'm not talking falling down drunk, just when you get a little buzz on, is there better or worse beers/hops?
I definitely have a more positive buzz from drinking what I consider to be delicious top tier beers. For example, if I'm trying a personal whale I've always wanted to try I feel a littler happier than just a normal beer buzz afterwards. One of my friends and I fondly refer to this feeling as the "Good Beer Jollies".
Even though they are closely related, Hops are not exactly the same as Cannabis. The THC found in Cannabis that gets folks high isn't found in Hops. http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2012-11/beersci-marijuana-related-hops The buzz you feel is caused by alcohol and how much of it you consume. However, the food you've eaten, medications you may be taking, amount of carbonation, etc. can affect the way the alcohol impacts you. Similarly flavors you enjoy are more likely to lead to that "I'll have just one more." decision when drinking.
I am not so sure about the buzz being different among beers but I can tell you for certain that a few hoppy beers give me unbelievable beer farts which is something that I am fairly good at to begin with. I am serious here. So much so that it is almost funny.
This all may be true. However, the only type of beer I actively crave is heavily hopped beer. I attribute this to the extra sedative effect that high levels of hops bring about. Just my .02 that hops and their chemical properties bring more to the table besides just the usual alcohol buzz.
Quite true, https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22849837 but that sedative effect is also a different effect than posed by the OP. You can get the sedative after effects, but not a different kind of buzz, from hops without any beer.
I think a large portion of it is mentality but I also would be inclined to believe that the different compounds found in different styles could effect a buzz. Same as I believe that stouts give a more powerful buzz though I have no evidence to prove either claim.
You're right on, dripa8. Charlie Papazian described hoppy beer in 'The Joy Of Homebrewing' as "euphoric" Hops contain many of the same essential oils as various fruits and herbs, much like good old cannabis. These essential oils have medicinal and noticeable effects when consumed, and are responsible for the variety of flavors and aromas we all love. Brew some hop tea and see!
Hoppy beers do give me a decidedly different buzz than malty beers do. This is a more noticeable difference with american hops, not so much with other varieties. I would like to blame the hop oils and their soporific effects, but it may just be in my mind.
I don't think so. Hops contain no THC. I don't think varietal should make a difference, as far as I know. I tend to have worse farts/shits after IPAs than non-hoppy styles, but even that is merely anecdotal.
I have never noticed a difference in the buzz except for how fast or slow it is. Lower abv slower buzz. I do notice that in some beers, the higher abv adjunct lagers, they give me a headache. FAST. They also make you feel off kilter very quickly and not really tipsy like the lager will do after a few. So for me that is the high sweetness form the corn sugar mixed with what I feel is a harsh alcohol, not the differences in hops
All I know, is that I can knock back 4-5 Bud Lights, and I feel no effects from alcohol, but if I drink one pint of pretty much any craft beer over 5%, I feel a little something
I have a friend who swears they have bad reactions to beers with simcoe hops in it. This would make sense as some hops have much higher levels of alpha acids than others. Why wouldn't this have some sort of effect?
Add a late-night White Castle run to that scenario and you have an explosive recipe for disaster. Believe me!
All I know is that vaping hops does in fact give me a noticeable euphoric feeling. Not a buzz, per say, more of a "heady" enlightened feeling. That, and they taste wonderful!
Here's an article that does a good job of explaining why that is: http://draftmag.com/science-session-abv-processing/ tl;dr - At the rate of 1 12oz beer per hour, a 5% beer will leave about double the amount of alcohol in your system that a 4% beer would. You don't just feel a different buzz, you're literally more drunk.
