Ok, I already know this is going to be a contentious topic, but here goes:

I swear I get different kinds of intoxication from different beers. For example, it seems like I can drink an indefinite number of Headys and feel: (a) a very happy, pleasant kind of buzz for as long as I stay awake and (b) absolutely zero hangover the next day. OTOH, whenever I drink Enjoy By (whatever the batch), I feel aggressive and moody, plus extremely hung over the next day. Believe me, my sample size is considerable. There are a number of beers I either drink moderately or avoid because I know the after-effects are gnarly: Sucks, most barleywines, and many stouts (but not BCBS/variants, weirdly enough).

Forgive me if this has been discussed at length, but what could cause this? Does this have something to do with the particular hops used? Something about the brewing process? FWIW, I've already thought at length about ABV, but I drink a lot of DIPAs and other high-ABV beers. Sometimes I feel like Heady (8%) could replace water for hydration purposes; it barely affects me. Go ahead and tell me I'm completely nuts (which might be true), but I'll bet other BAs have experienced something similar.

Ethenol is Ethenol buddy. Could there possibly be a thread without the mention of heady/Pliny?

Ha . . . well, I'm mentioning Heady because I'm on my fourth of the night and barely feel it. How about Racer 5? I can drink that all night long and feel like I've been drinking iced tea.

There really shouldn't be a difference because alcohol is alcohol. Personally, I think that Pacifico is more intoxicating, mainly because I got drunk off it once in college, but otherwise booze is booze. That said, it seems that calling someone an alcoholic is pretty common around here lately so I'm curious to see how this thread goes.

Maybe the sugar contents are different? Or maybe you eat different types of foods based on the type of beer? Have you drank blindly and see what effects you feel. Maybe its in your head

Like I say, the sample size is, ahem, considerable. In other words, I've eaten many different foods with these beers, and set/setting have been varied, as well. I don't think I'm being disingenuous about alcoholism, etc.; I'm trying to get at whether there's something about the chemical compounds/etc. of different beers that might account for different kinds of intoxication. The best analogy I can come up with is marijuana: there are definitely different kinds of "highs" that accompany different strains of pot. Who I actually want to chime in here is @Roguer, whom I'll bet has an educated opinion.

I have never noticed a difference between beers.

How there was many a night that I blamed tequila for some rambunctious behavior. I am a firm believer that every bottle of tequila should come with a number for a bail bondsman and an attorney.
Meanwhile, I always thought a night of drinking gin made me much more chill and social.

maybe it's acetaldehyde or some other compound you've got a problem with.

Here is about as educated an opinion as you're going to find:

To me, the issue is similar to the whole "does the same mass-produced beer taste different from batch to batch?" issue. Yes, it's possible that there is a subtle difference in your intoxication feeling (or in the taste of a given beer to keep with the analogy), but a far more likely explanation is that the difference comes predominantly from the drinker, than the drinkee.

OP, I get what you're saying although I haven't paid particular attention to how different beers or styles affect me. Is is possible you are drinking different beers faster or slower, thus resulting in different alcohol absorption rates?

I do know one thing. I can drink more lighter (in color) beers than I can darker beers. If you give me a Russian Imperial Stout or a DIPA, I can drink two DIPA's with comparable alcohol content be clear headed with no haziness while drinking them. Meanwhile I can drink the darker beer and if I don't limit myself I tend to have portions of the night that are just dark and I usually end up feeling like hell the next day. No matter what you drink hangovers will occur but the older I have gotten I have found the less I am able to drink beers that are dark in color for whatever reason. As for taste I do enjoy them, but its often not worth it.

Are you outing him as an alcoholic or a pothead?

OP: chances are that what you are noticing with these beers (as far as intoxication) has more to do with previous experiences and current expectations than these beers affecting you in different ways. I believe that hangovers can be affected by sugars and yeast in beer, so that could explain the morning after differences.

Maybe you just like heady more than enjoy by so when drinking enjoy by you're mad it's not heady causing you to be aggressive.

Pliny.......just had to throw that in there since I referenced heady.

I asked this before and was told "booze is booze."

I still think there's something to a hoppy beer's drunken feeling compared to something maltier.

Ethenol is ethenol, as others have said, but the method of delivery varies. I certainly notice different effects with what I drink. It is not as pronounced with beer as it is with liquor though, for me at least. I avoid many liquors for this reason.
