I wouldn't trust the guys saying "ethenol is ethenol". Then again, if they've been drinking beer with vinyl alcohol in it and are still standing they might be super heroes.

When it comes to ethanol, however, there shouldn't be much deviation. It's all about your mood, the ABV and how fast you drink.

Somehow you have managed to say something that is simultaneously both true and false.

I don't get it between craft beers but definitely a difference between wine drunk/hangovers, vs. liquor, vs. beer. Wine is by far the worst and most damaging for hangovers. Liquor gives me the "funest" drunk where I am very talkative, outgoing and whatnot. Beer, especially craft gives me a mellow euphoric drunk where I'm not so outgoing but just at peace. I hardly ever get a hangover from craft unless I am dehydrated.

Nah, he's just a thoughtful guy who's probably thought about this.

This is a great conversation, love hearing the different perspectives.

I remember from my younger days, that tequila seemd to mess me up in a different way than other liquors, and I remember PBR did the same thing for beers. The buzz was just... different somehow.

IDK... "I might be a little dusted but I'm not insane."

I don't think that insisting over and over again that ethanol/ethenol is ethanol/ethenol is particularly illuminating. Sure, the alcohol is the same whether it's in gin or beer or in a can of Heady or a can of Busch. While the alcohol is what ultimately makes us drunk, how the alcohol is delivered and what unexpected, and perhaps unwanted, fellow travelers come along for the ride could certainly play a part in how you experience the intoxicating effects of the alcohol as well as the withdrawal from it. I doubt that anyone is getting funding for double-blind studies on this! And while it is certainly not any more than anecdotal evidence, I'm a bit of a lightweight with the booze, but I regularly down a can of Heady in the shower after a run in the morning and then go about my day. I've tried the same with other beers of equal ABV and found it a bit more difficult getting dressed and to the office! Scientific evidence? Nope, interesting though!

I swear i get a much more clear headed buzz from sours. why? i couldn't tell you. Even if i've been drinking other types and feel kinda blurry/fuzzy drunk, if i drink a sour it almost always clears my head right up.

Not beer related but alcohol related. I found Cheap Grain spirits make me aggressive. While Choice Grain spirits make me Chatty and Happy. Plus the Hangover from the Cheap Grains were the Worst, compared to the Choice Grains hangover (which were rare). So it might be the grains used, but that's just my two cents..

I don't know whether the "buzz" is much different - there's probably not much of a chemical/technical difference although I do notice that my body handles some things better than others. Quite a bit of wine tends to make me nauseaous, switching up and down from different beverages in relatively "short" periods of time tends to have similar effects and bring on worse hangovers. Pure liquor like tequila and vodka don't bode well with me, either.

Haven't noticed too much of a difference between beers in terms of buzz - some beers do kinda make me nauseous which may be due to taste for some. I usually feel best when I don't switch around too much and stick with one kind of drink if I do.

One of the things I tend to tolerate exceptionally well is certain cocktails (White Russians, Painkillers, Margaritas, Lynchburg Lemonade etc.) and mead. (as far as I like the taste, I don't bother with stuff that requires forcing)

    So many different factors here:

    Different grains used.
    Different hops used.
Different water used, which could have certain elements in it.
    Different yeast used.
    Non filtered
    Rate of consumption
Amount of residual sugars (which in turn would have an affect on insulin, which in turn has a very strong tie to your hormonal balance/mood)

Sure, ethanol is ethanol, but 92% of the rest of the beer is not ethanol.

Never noticed a different type of drunk that's specific to a certain beer.

I do find that beer can make me sleepier than wine which in turn makes me sleepier than spirits - not sure if that's a function of volume consumed or something else. So if a night requires longevity I tend to stick to spirits.

At university gin seemed to fuck me up on many levels, but that may just be down to drinking far too much of it.

Weird thing about me is no matter how much I drink I very rarely get hangovers. And when I do, I seem to get off very lightly compared to others that were out that night as well.

And different people react differently to these variables. For myself, I react poorly to wine barrel aged beers and wine-like beers; they seem to dehydrate me more than other beers. Knowing this, I can usually mix it up enough to avoid the unwanted after effects.

Its called the brain, it thinks, therefore it fools itself all the time. weed and pot kind of hard to know whats going on, but its sure is fun. lol.

In a controlled study with real scientists and all that jazz, say there is nothing to all your saying and its all in your head. I say of course it is. any chemical is mostly going to effect your brain. when your under said effect, you have no idea what is going on really, get it. Booze is mind altering drug. It why I like it so much.....

I been known to think I was smart under the influence many times, fooled me.:grinning::grinning::grimacing:

But the trials aren't exactly blind... confirmation bias is a bigger issue than small sample size. If it's as consistent and noticeable as you say, then you should be able to have a friend pour the beers for your blind one night and then be able to tell him which beer it was based the manner of your drunkeness.

Make it a friend you trust so you don't end up blindfolded with a Torpedo while he makes off with your Heady Topper.

I would imagine bottle-conditioned versus force carb probably makes a difference too. Bottle-conditioned beers have a number of hangover-preventing vitamins/nutrients in the residual yeast such as vitamin B, which has been proven to reduce/prevent hangovers.
