I am constantly hearing about "Piney" beers, as well as "juicy/citrus/tropical" beers as well, mostly in reference to IPA's. Admittedly, I've never been one to go crazy over an IPA, but that's not to say I don't enjoy them thoroughly. I do pick up on pine, or citrus notes when drinking an IPA, but i'd like to get a better grasp on it all.

List a few from each type that you would suggest trying (within reasonable availability) to get a good idea of what is what.

    Thanks, and cheers!

*Edit: Sorry if this thread has already been made, a search only came up with people talking about which they prefer, and not really listing examples of each style.

Amarillo = flowers, BO if done badly (3F Gumballhead good, Rogue Yellow Snow IPA bad)
Cascade = more flowers (SNPA or SN Torpedo)
Citra = tropical fruits and/or cat piss (I guess Citra Ass Down, if you feel like paying $18 for a bomber; I'd rather trade a kidney for some Zombie Dust instead)
Simcoe = pine and/or cat piss (Weyerbacher Double Simcoe)
Centennial = lemongrass (Founders Centennial IPA if you like tons of bitterness, Bell's Two Hearted if you don't)
Mosaic = either tropical fruits and berries...or pure fucking scallion (just a personal note, I'm not usually a fan of this hop)

Amarillo gives me tropical fruit. Not sure where you get flowers from.
Citra is grapefruit and mango to me.
    Centennial is pine and lemon.
Nelson Sauvin is grapes, pine, and weed.
    Summit is pine and onion.
    Chinook is more pine.
    Columbus is pine.

I would rather go for something with citra or simcoe. I perfer the grapefruit taste. I make an ipa with both.
If I'm feeling crazy I'll blend it with a scotch ale and get the best of both worlds.

    • Galaxy: Dense Peach fruitiness with a Resinous undertone.
    • Calypso: Very nice Herbal Tea notes with ripe Pear fruitiness.
    • Centennial: Floral notes with subtle Lemon and Pineapple.
    • Citra: Very Citric with undertones of Mango fruit.
    • Motueka: Dense Oranges with Floral and Passion Fruit undertones.
    • Columbus: Huge Resinous Pine and Earth.
    • Simcoe: (This is a weird one) Huge Resinous notes with Tropical Fruit undertones.
I like all these hops for their Complexity.

No one gets orange and tangerine citrus on Centennial? It jumps right out at me in 2 Hearted, Centennial and Racer 5.

Each individuals palate is unique and therefore each person will perceive flavors differently. One person will say a certain hop variety has flavors of citrus while another will say flowers and a third some other flavor descriptor.

Keith (@Kadonny), Centennial (e.g., Two Hearted) has a BIG citrus flavor for my palate.

    Cheers!

Thanks for all the replies thus far, I appreciate the information. Most of you gave the profiles of specific hops, which is great, but I was asking more about specific beers, and what notes they give off. Ones that you would call prime examples of a certain flavor.

The point is the hop variety that is used IS what gives those notes.

Once you know what hop variety you're looking for it's generally pretty simple to find a few beers that use it, particularly since there are some posted in here. A fair number of brewers (Pipeworks as a great example, and great beers) even use the name of the hop variety in the name of the beer.

Just as side note, there is not a single cascade hop in SN Torpedo. Citra, Magnum, Crystal.

The hopuinion recommendation is really where to start. The other thing I would highly recommend. Buy a grapefruit, a lemon, probably not gonna be able to find fresh but if possible peach and apricot. Should be able to find fresh mango.

Rip into those fruits along side some IPAs.

I also highly recommend that really fresh pink grapefruit juice (also this should be used when referencing Brett beers. For some reason we have linked to the idea that Brett smells like a humans ass having stuck to a horse, nothing could be further from the truth.

Lagunitas Sucks is a readily available DIPA that has a very tropical and peach forward aroma and flavor with a bit of citrus rounding it out. Of course everyone's palate is different, but that is what I pick up when drinking this brew.

I'll have to revisit lagunitas sucks, Ive had it before but I wasn't in an environment to enjoy it, I just kinda drank it up. It gets a lot of love here though so i'll get me another. I do recall expecting it to be like brown shugga and then being kind of like WTF, but like I said I didn't really give it too much thought.

Just my palate - tried to match with some somewhat readily available beers:

Citra: I get more tropical than citrus, mango, sometimes pineapple - if used to bitter a bit I get more of the citrus notes, grapefruit pith... Abrasive (pineapple juice) Zombie Dust, Fresh Squeezed, Pseudo Sue

Amarillo: Candied orange, some of the typical grapefruit notes... Founder's Red's Rye

Centennial: Called super cascade at one time, I get more of a floral note than citrus - Bell's Two-Hearted

Cascade: The quintessential American hop - I get grapefruit, some other generic citrus notes and a firm grassy bitterness if used to bitter - SNPA, most any standard American IPA has a bit of cascade thrown in

Mosaic: Others have mentioned berry, I get passion fruit and sometimes a soapy flavor but I love this hop - Great Lakes Chillwave

Simcoe: Such an awesome hop - huge pine and clean bitterness, and when used late or for aroma I get huge tropical and citrus notes - love Simcoe - Alot of the big boys have a big Simcoe presence including Pliny

Galaxy: Big hop - I get straight up orange/tangerine juice from Galaxy - Clown Shoes Galactica

Schlafly T-IPA is a great juicy/tropical example of an IPA. It has great forward flavors of grapefruit and pineapple, all balanced by the Galaxy and Topaz hops. It is my favorite and Schlafly distributes to Kentucky I believe. The only problem is that this one is only a five month run which ends at the end of February. You may still find some, but it is about to be replaced by their AIPA which runs until August. Then T-IPA will be back in October.

me too, if you throw in a little grapefruit. I would call it grapefruit and tangerine actually, to me Cascade is more straight orange. Amarillo grapefruit over orange, with a hint of tangerine. To me.
