    So I just cracked a 8% DIPA by Shared (Side Project) Tommy Fresh and it is slushy. I've had a ton of beer in that fridge and have never had a beer over 5% freeze or slush. I've had coors light do it before.

    How cold does it have to be for an 8% beer to go slushy?

    Darned if I know but there's one spot in the back of my fridge that will do that while the rest of the fridge won't.

    Turn your fridge down a little.

    At 8% ABV, it will freeze at 27 degrees Fahrenheit. It will start getting slushy at that temperature. Style has nothing to do with it. It's possible that the batch has a lower ABV for some reason. Was the beer located near the vent where the cold comes out? If I stack things in my fridge near the top of the top shelf, it is near the vent and things freeze.

    If you skim the ice, then put it back in, it will lower the freezing point due to an increased ABV. This is how Eisbock style beers are "made".

    There are a number of calculators and charts online, but I used the following;

    Tried that and the rest wasn't getting cold enough so I just quit putting beer in the slushy spot.

    Strange thing is, it was under the freezer compartment. So I agree, there are "cold spots" that are located inside refrigerators. So i moved my remaining one to the opposite side. Opened one up today and same thing. It was right next to my Narrow Gauge Fallen Flag. It is 7% with no slush, Tommy Fresh is supposedly 8%. Sounds like its a little less than that.

    Everyone wants to talk about your fridge, but I understand what you are really asking. I started a thread on it a year or so ago. I had some new belgium rampant at the time that was supposed to be 8.5% that was freezing up quicker than some lower abv beers when I stuck them in the freezer to get them colder before I drank them. I suspected, as I think you are suspecting, that they actually had less abv than labeled. I came to that conclusion myself, even though people said I was wrong. I still believe it was true.

    Came here to say this.

    Also it can freeze just fine. 8% isnt too high to freeze. I saw a video once where a corona was liquid, pulled out a freezer, and when it was cracked open it slowly froze upward. Its some science i dont know the name of.

    From the internet - which is never wrong - a can of beer or pop near freezing can slush/freeze when opened due to the release of can pressure and CO2 from the liquid slightly raising the temperature at which it freezes. So - the can pressure and CO2 in the liquid is preventing it from freezing, until you open it and those factors are gone.
