    Hello all. We recently bought the dry hopped DIPA pack from Midwest supplies. I was shocked to see that they ABV on this completed was only around 5%. Do you think we can amp up the ABV by simply adding priming sugar and still get a good product? If not, how can we do this and get something with a bit more punch? I'm pretty new at this, so don't crucify my ignorance!

    Something is not right here. Which kit was this exactly? If it was an exctract kit that Midwest was calling a DIPA, there's no way the ABV finished at 5%, unless you made more than 5 gallons, or some extract didn't get into the kettle, or your fermentation did not finish. Please post details, including volume, Original Gravity, and Final Gravity.

    Post the ingredients and amounts and then how big you want it and I will run it through beer tools.

    A little sugar could be used, and that would up the ABV, but just note that it will dry up your beer some. There is some care that needs to go into recipes, so you just can't amp up a beer with sugar and expect good results. You need to provide more details.
    The Hop Head Double IPA from Midwest Supplies should at least get you to 8%, so something definitely went wrong. I have actually tried that beer that someone else brewed following the recipe and it was pretty good...

    Finally if the beer is done fermenting, I would just bottle, prime and see how it comes out. Sometimes when you're starting out, you measure things wrong or otherwise make mistakes, and the final product still comes out nicely.

    Did you mean your hydrometer's final reading was 5%? That is not the ABV.

    What was your OG & FG? Theyshould be numbers measured like 1.0XX

    it's still in fermentation, but based on the box:

    OG= 1.069

    SG= 1.000

    on the box it says potential ABV is ~6.7% it's the Hope Head DIPA

    I just felt that was low. I was thinking somewhere in the range of 8-10%. When I think DIPA, I think something like Moylan's Hopsickle or Karbach Rodeo Clown

    You may want to double check that. 1.000 would be very unlikely (way too low) for a DIPA.

    5%. 6.7%. Whatever. No need to be precise in your question. :slight_smile:
    I can't say what's printed on the box, but from The Hop Head DIPA extract kit recipe sheet on the Midwest site...

    SG: 1.070-1.074
    FG: 1.016-1.018

    Let's say OG 1.072 and FG 1.017. That's an ABV somewhere around 7.2-7.6%, depending on the formula you believe.
