Trying to figure out which DIPA are comparable based on style.

For example I would compare Heady Topper and El Cumbre Elevated.

Anyone else able to help me figure out which DIPA I should try at the same time?

    Elevated isn't a DIPA.

I know people try to compare Heady and Pliny and I think they are different style DIPA. Want to figure out what compares to what as far as DIPA.

    For example what compares to:

    Heady

    Pliny

    Maharaja

I find it very close to Heady though

Hop Stoopid is apparently comparable to Pliny, if that helps.

A DIPA tasting...sounds like an interesting idea. I recommend throwing some hopslam into the mix

So if looking at west coast DIPA I should try to compare:
    Pliny
    Hop stoopid
    And??

    East coast:
    Heady
    HF Abner
    And??

Surprised you found Elevated comparable to HT. They have entirely different hop profiles.

RR Pliny the Younger and Societe Roustabout. But good luck finding either.

    Obviously our categories need categories.

I propose a naming convention based on the dewey decimal system.

    DIPA - 000
    Heady-like - 001
    Pliny-like - 010
    Maharaja-like - 020
    etc.

So then in the future when a beer is classified at a bar, store, site. Instead of just "DIPA" we put "000.009" to imply a DIPA which is almost like Pliny, but with a hint of Heady-likeness.

In fact, we can improve this by adding the year!

    000.009.2012 vs 000.009.2011

Damn I'm brilliant when I'm drinking heavily....

Sorry that I appear to have mad people dumber or them hurt their heads. I was only trying to get an idea of which beers are similar in the DIPA genre.

For example I just had fresh pliny and an abrasive and while both DIPA they are not similar in my opinion although both good

For DIPAs that are fairly similar, I'd say Hopslam and Sucks are pretty comparable. Both are DIPAs, but have a sweet undertone to them and aren't just all intense Hop Bombs, though are still totally hop forward.

I'm not mad, dumber or hurting.

I think the problem is that DIPA is the style. Sure, there's variation within the style, but if they all tasted the same, why have more than one?

So while it may seem that the differences are so great it's hard to compare them, but I think that's just because we are blessed with so damn many great DIPAs! A problem I'm happy to have.
