We just disabled embedding of full message text in personal conversation and watched thread/forum notification emails. This means that users who have these options enabled will still get an email alert, however, they'll need to click the link within the email to view the full text.

    Why?

We apparently had a lot of confused users.
    • Despite the emails saying: "Please do not reply to this email. You must visit BeerAdvocate to reply." many were replying to them; or rather us.
    • Many of those who replied thought that they had replied to the conversation or thread.
    • Users were considering the item read, however, they wouldn't get further notifications unless they visited the item.
    Less work for us
We were getting a ton of replies, that we then needed to sort through, discard, or reply to in order to alert the confused user.

    Security
Many of those who replied often included very personal information.

    Revenue
Not a reason for the update, but for the sake of transparency we do generate revenue when users come back to the site to read the full text.

We understand that this update might be an inconvenience for some, but it was necessary.

    Thanks for your support,
