I hated to see it go! I enjoyed moving up, albeit very slowly. Hope there is a way to bring it back. And also where we're from. Thanks

I'd miss it if were to never return, but it won't affect my use of and contributions to the site.

Should it return, I would prefer to see "likes" dropped from the equation altogether, with more emphasis on points for full reviews, added pix, places and beers, while de-emphasizing ratings (ticks).... Make it easier in terms of increments of items attained (i.e. every 100 instead of 250, 500, etc...)

    Prosit!!

My sentiments exactly. Beer Karma is what really made me start contributing rather than lurking in the shadows. With the karma gone, now I may return to the shadows...

to quote a great beer drinker / patriot "give me beer karma or give death" sums up how I feel about my need for beer karma.

100% agree with this and the same for place reviews, If i go to a new town i would like to see written reviews for bottle shops and brewery's and eateries/bars, Karma for written reviews.

Well stated. Please bring it back. I have actually done place reviews because of beer karma.

Frankly, there is no technical reason (infrastructure, UI, or coding) for removing beer karma. There are methods to address all of them.

My guess is that cost and/ resource were the driving reasons. Probably don't want to have resource maintaining the feature set. Use them to build/support other features. If so, wrong decision. Incentive based systems are strong method for driving and keeping people on your site.

    Thanks.

Just as an FYI, In the original announcement of Disabling Beer Karma the reason cited was the amount of computation needed to process the Karma stats, etc.

Bring back the beer glass/goblet fill it slowly with beer as you contribute and make that Karma (pts) unknown to members...just contribute to the site.

Lol, I spit my martini a bit. I might be in if you get to wear a big funny hat, maybe with a cool tassel.

I never gave a horse's behind about beer karma. People seem to love it though. Just bring it back with an opt-out option.

Definitely agree with you here. I am generally not watching the new user thread too often, I usually wait until the users hit the big social threads talked about a lot in this thread.

Or was Beer Karma what brought down the site each night for a while :astonished:. Let me start the conspiracy theory right now. Maybe it turns out that Karma is a bitch :grimacing:.

    Not sure if you saw another announcement that they took down, but the only one I saw said;
    • We weren't happy with the system, which was meant to be an interim solution to replace our original Beer Karma system after the forum crash of 2012.
    • The system's overhead was too high, as we found out after disabling it. This is an issue that we'll address with any future updates, but the significant reduction in overhead simply outweighs keeping it enabled.
This sounds more like they were unhappy with it, maybe due to hassles, complaints, etc - but when they disabled it then they noticed that performance increased and/or resource usage dropped notably. Apparently the performance increase wasn't the original reason, but was a side benefit.

Exactly. The decision to disable and reevaluate Beer Karma was purely because we weren't happy with it. There were no financial concerns, and the performance boost after the fact removed any desire to keep it enabled during our reevaluation.

There's a ton of upside for Beer Karma, not the least of which is the fact that it helps drive user generated content. There's lots of studies that suggest that people respond to gamification of this sort at a very primal level. Hope you can find a way for BK to return as less of a resource hog.

So this means it will not be coming back? Unless there is a way to make beer karma not effect site performance?

This was never stated, and there'd be no point in reevaluating it and asking for user feedback if there was no chance of it ever coming back.
