When out and about and having a new beer, I will later post it without a review. I don't feel comfortable reviewing a beer unless I am typing it in on my laptop as I drink/review it, but I will still score it if it is still fresh in my mind. I'm already teased by friends and family for posting pictures of every beer I have, so I am disinclined to whip out a notebook to do a review. Again, not sure how we could easily discern which likes in NBS are for a review, so counting NBS likes would be all or nothing.

Agreed - the human moderation required regularly in order to make the determination on a post by post basis of whether or not to award Beer Karma would be way too high...

Also, wouldn't the review also be posted for the beer (rather than just in the NBS thread)? Then the person would be getting the BK they deserve already.

There a few folks who maintain quarterly "Visiting..." threads for PDX, Seattle, and a few other places in the NW forum. It really helps cut down on the repetitive "where to go" threads that used to pop up almost daily. They have to be a pain to keep up on, and those folks certainly deserve an extra bone being thrown their way.

Yeah no doubt, I've seen a few of them in the South East forum as well for FL (Orlando and Tampa), Savannah, and Asheville.

I originally tended to agree with @WesMantooth if it came down to it - NBS is a strange one. But others have brought up good points that I think NBS should be in a special category of non-counting likes. Extra moderation of "likes" is too much of a hassle.

Of course, maybe we could just keep likes as a completely separate stat than Karma, independent of whether we count the "like farm" threads or not.

    • I would have contention with awarding karma for "likes' if they were given the same amount of karma that would be awarded for beer/place reviews. I like the really old system in which forum posts were worth 1/10 of what a review was worth. I would like to see both posts and likes awarded at that level in the new system.

    • I also liked how in the old system you were rewarded for longevity on the site. The longer you were on the site the easier it was to attain karma.

    • Mostly, I think karma was way too easy to get in the system we just left. It used to be that only a very small handful of BAs achieved poobah status, and only after multiple years of contributing. Thus, the status actually meant something. In the recent system a member could reach it in a year or two, and so many did that it was meaningless.

The "LIKES" shouldn't get much weight IMHO. But having said that, I think they are a window into contributions to the community. Granted, I may be a bit too liberal with giving "LIKES", but keeping them on the low end of how to factor the Karma is a quick cure for dipsticks like me.

I tend to give a lot of Likes. A post I agree with, a post I disagree with, yet is well thought-out and written, one that makes me laugh, one that moves the conversation in an interesting way, and even the (very rare) one that pretty much sums up a thread, the true "end thread" post. Oh, and dogs. Pics with dogs or otters always get a like from me.

The idea of keeping a Like count separate from BK is a good idea.

Thank you so much for your kinds words!! I truly enjoy spending time with all the NBS'ers. It's become one of my favorite times of the week. I appreciate the education and enjoy the comradery. My wife now knows to leave me alone with my new beer and my computer for a couple of hours on Sunday afternoon.

Fair enough. I enjoy the NBS thread weekly, and the none review threads do reduce the word count per page to keep it from feeling like you're swiping through a weekly novel. Perhaps posts would only count for "likes" with a high enough word count...? But I feel like that would just be an avenue for word vomit.

I pretty much agree with how you decide what to like - in discussion threads I can like something I don't agree with - I am liking how or why they're saying it if reasoned and friendly. In NBS and WBAYDN I like those with beers I like or think I'd like, if someone posts something I find funny, if the music selection looks good, dogs, cats, food, and cool glassware. I don't just blindly like every post I see though, I do give it some consideration. Sorry, but can't bring myself to like posts with Vikings, Bears or Cowboys logos.

Didn't even think about them but YES they should also get rewarded for their contributions and hard work.

Well, since the old system capped Karma awarded for likes at 10,000 likes that could be carried forward. (Or if I'm mis-remembering it could be part of the mechanism.)

Many are available in both places and there is often encouragement given to people that they should build a review around what they have said in NBS.

I could definitely see the human moderation being too much. Just a suggestion. I can't speak for everyone, but I know when I type up a review on NBS, I type it in the thread (while sipping on the beer) and then copy all the text and scores over to get my BA Score and rDev compiled.

Reviews in NBS are huge for me since it gives me a manageable bit of weekly reading for a taste of what's going on in the beer world, opposed to just clicking through screens and screens of beers and beer reviews in the system here (which can prove rewarding, but seeing all the individual beer pictures and quality reviews makes NBS a little more valuable for finding new beers for my time).

I too like most other BA's miss the beer Karma. Being a visual kind of guy, I especially enjoyed the icons [beer mugs/glasses] of old. Just my 2-cents.

    Cheers to all!!

Was wondering what happened. Not a big fan of the "point" system. But a "Happy Birthday" or "anniversary" message etc. would be cool. Just a thought.

The site said something along the lines of, "Log in on your birthday and you get __ points." I think it was 5. I don't know if it always worked. But I like anniversary for each year one is active.
