I spent extra effort finding beers and contributing to the forums. Just to get Beer Karma. Then in doing so, I learned a lot more about beer. I would like to see it come back.

@dbrauneis Great points! Here are some thoughts

Syles: Yea, I did have it go kind of high, but I wasn't sure how often styles change or get added - that would need to be tweaked downward then.

    1. Id suggest that the karma accumulated to that point (the move or in this case changing your location) would stay, but then the person could start accumulating karma for the new state. Any in between accumulation would be lost unless you moved back to the prior state. (so hypothetical - milestones are 15 and 25 breweries. You live in NY and have visited 17 breweries, then move to Illinois. You would keep the pts for visiting 15 in NY, and then start at 0 for IL. You then move back to NY because IL sucks (I like realistic hypos) and change your location back to NY, you can then resume at 17.) Now I am throwing this out there, but we'd have to make sure the system could actually be set up to run that way.

    2. Yea, its an arbitrary distinction, but it seemed easier than doing geolocation. And while it is an arbitrary distinction, its at least one that makes some sense.

    3. Again, its arbitrary, and would pose a harder time for people who live in states with fewer breweries. But then again what about people who live in locations with poor distribution? They have fewer options to get karma from the styles tried type of categories. (not a perfect analogy, but not everyone has an equal starting point to get all the karma)

    4. Hadn't thought of that, but yes, by country would make the most sense.

    5. Yea, I can see what you are saying. My main impetus behind changing it really was a desire to encourage people to drink and support local breweries and breweries in their state. Now of course drinking within your state and local can be very different depending on the state so its not perfect.

    How about something like this:

    Try a beer from 10 styles – 5
    Try a beer from 25 styles – 5
    Try a beer from 50 styles – 10

    Try a beer from 75 styles – 10
    Try a beer from 100 styles – 10
Try a beer from all available styles – 25

While I'm at it, here are the levels from the most recent iteration of beer karma:
    Possible revision?
I'd reduce the number of lower levels. Keep it simpler.

Moving into the new system, people's stats would be kept, but merged into the new point awarding system and new labels. So some people might come back as a different title depending on where their BK came from.

Under the proposed system there would be no cap on karma since most of the categories continue upward indefinitely (likes, posts, ratings/reviews, adding beers/placeas/pictures, etc) so it should be theoretically possible to hit Grand High Poobah.

I like it. Wow, a lotta work. I agree with the decreased weight of "LIKES." I think Site Mods should get more than a simple anniversary award though. Also, I like the 10:1 value ratio you set up for beer reviews vs. hads. That really encourages reviewing. Thanks for your contribution to this discussion.

Are you thinking a one time karma boost? I'm not sure how to do it other than an anniversary award?

I'm sorry. I was not clear. I mean if an anniversary award earns 10 pts. I think a Mod should earn more than that, like 25 a year.

For fun, how about doing something resembling Boy Scout badges? Accomplish, help, learn, visit, sponsor, brew, etc. Could lump other things into this, such as styles, states, countries. Get extra points for every 5 badges.

Another thought is points for achieving levels of Cicerone, or other achievements that can be proven, such as degrees associated with brewing. Or becoming master brewer? Suppose this could become a hassle to verify.

My main issue with using badges is that its essentially what untapped does.

As for the cicerone and stuff like that - 1) I think it's just too hard to verify and stay on top of it across all the members on here, and 2) beer karma is to promote membership and activity in the site so it seems to me that that would be outside of the scope of the website.

I like what @FBarber is trying to do, but I'm not sure if specifics are what the site administrators are looking for - despite the fact they seem to have a considerable amount of thought put into them. But what do I know :flushed:.

More generically, I do like the concept of breaking things down more. As mentioned many posts ago, I'm a stats geek, so if you can break down the stats for me, that's great. After that, if you want to give points, that'd be fun.

So, assuming such breakdown isn't crippling (I know doing more breakdown does cost something), I'd love the idea of point for first beer in a style, state, country. Then levels of 5, 10 , 25, whatever for each slice/category gains you some karma.

Likely too much complexity for what it produces/gains, but I like the concept; it probably would add a layer of differentiation between "karma levels," though. Then again, just being able to see some breakdown easier would be fun for me (as previously stated).

They may not want specifics - who knows? I was just trying to get the discussion to be more productive than bring back karma.

As for the stats - I know that they have already mentioned that the BA 4.0 update will likely contain upgraded stats for the users. What that will look like exactly, who knows?

This might be like when Coca-cola "disabled" the original Coke formula, just to bring it back later (Coke "Classic") with significantly positive results. If this isn't the case, it seems like a bonehead move by BA--the consumer response in support of BK seems to be nearly unanimous.

I never thought about it much before, but I think having the BK motivator also propelled me to do things I wouldn't have otherwise (drink an American Malt Liquor or Adjunct Lager, in order to tick toward the 100 styles goal, for instance).

I don't review beers much , I don't feel qualified, and who really cares what I think? It's simply an opinion, that's it, I could do this as simply as a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

You would be surprised how many people care.

And you are as qualified as anyone else on this site.

Keep in mind, this is a consumer site, You don't need to be a cicerone or a BJCP judge. About the only think people ask is that you review under proper conditions, as you see them.

    Your opinion does matter.

I would love to read one of you reviews. Would like to see written reviews of places you have visited in your home state. If i visit the area or am passing thru i can then take a look at what people like or dislike.

Thanks, but I see great reviews by Utopia Jane, Cave Dave, and Jack, Jess, Herr Burgess , and it's pointless, they're is a league of their own. These guys are well read and well informed . About the only topic I'd feel even half qualified to comment would be on IPAs. You want a good read research some of the German beer threads, the info is incredible, some real knowledgable Ba guys and gals. I was serious about the thumbs up or down, how simple.
