I am drinking a G Knight by Oskar Blues. First time trying the beer. I am a bit disappointed. Very Hoppy,( good) but astringent, not balanced, not much fruit, and not malty. The date is July 2012. Comments?

    What were you expecting?

You say very hoppy, do you mean bitter or a large overall hop flavor?

    Good question. Bitter.

That's ironic because I just finished my first G'Knight like 5 minutes ago, that's weird. I personally found it very malty. I think it's a good example of the style, but kinda boring and one dimensional. I guess I was hoping for more too. But it's still not bad, IMO. Mine was canned on 10-22-12..

One dimensional is an accurate description. If it's a DIPA, then there is not a lot of fruit, and the aroma is mild.
I don't find it full of character.

That's OK, just drink something else. There are thousands of beers out there to choose from, so drink something you enjoy.

I look at it as an Imperial Red Ale. The style might have its own category here on BA, but I think it should.

That is some fresh G Night, that beer is so good when fresh. It fades fast in my opinion, so July wouldn't interest me.

Oscar Blues recently started distributing here, and G'Knight quickly became one of my favorite beers. It was very fresh, though, canned within a week. I can't speak for a four month old one, but I definitely tasted a lot of citrus, even a little berry flavors that I find in red ales.

I don't think they were going for balanced, but you should give it another try if you can find a younger can.

I really like that beer. I like Great Lakes Nosferatu too. I think I like most imperial reds, actually.

Yea, you're drinking an old can. Not sure if the Tall Boys are the only size offering now, but 16ozers should be the freshest cans around. As said, G'Knight is an Imperial Red. Super hoppy (on the nose when fresh...pine like whoa), and an equal if not more so malty base. Bitterness will tend to stay as opposed to aroma with hoppy beers. It should be very malty, and even more so with age. Never had a problem personally picking up the maltiness with either fresh and aged (Gordon) cans.

A July canning date is kinda old for a hoppy beer. You might want to try a fresher one, before you conclude whether u like it or not. But anyways, I didn't care for it too much when I had it and it was only a month old. Just not a fan of onions. However I really enjoy their Deviant Dale's and Ten Fidy.

That's weird, I got the onion thing from Deviant Dale's and none from G'Knight.

Interesting. I did get some in Deviant's, but G'Knight was onion dominant to me. Oh well. Palates, they be different.
