I was going to get a tube that will just fit in the opening of my carboy to use as a blow off hose. I was looking at home depot website to see if they would have what I need (1.75"). And I came across this discharge hose. Lets say a 4 foot section was cut, one end was clamped on to the outside of the carboy opening, the other end was submerged in a container of sanitizer. Maybe even weight it. would their be any disadvantages that you could think of? I was thinking you would have (possible) a better seal. Could be used on all carboys (not all have the same sized opening). It would take up less room in storage.
I'd rather have a transparent one...but if it fits it fits : ) That is a pool drain (collapsible)...needs some constant hefty pressure to inflate/be usable
That's actually too small. I need a 1 - 7/8 OD tube. Which home depot has I think. I just saw the discharge hose and got curious if anyone else has a similar idea.
So you are talking about a hose that will fit over the outside of the mouth of the carboy? I'd consider how easy it is to sanitize the material that is used in this hose, and whether it can be cleaned for re-use or if it becomes disposable. My other thought is that by putting a hose over the mouth of the carboy, you expose the top of the rim for collecting debris if the krausen reaches that level. I don't know if that is necessarily a bad thing, but it doesn't sound like it is a good thing if little bugs get in and they like the potential condensate or whatever may accumulate there. It just seems to me to be a bigger risk that just shoving a hose inside the throat of the opening.
the discharge hose you linked to is made for sump pumps and applications that will be under pressure. the walls are normally collapsed like a paper bag, but when enough fluid is pushed through the hose it opens up. when the pump turns off the walls collapse again and it helps drain the line. it also rolls up nice for carrying in the tool box. i would be concerned that the force of the blow off is not enough to open the the hose for draining. if there is not enough pressure its just going to clog and back up. and it is probably not a food safe tube either. personally, i would not bother. that's just my advice. That Blue PVC discharge hose is not FDA approved or Food Safe in any way... We have lots of options for 2" ID Food Grade hose, but considerably more money than the Blue PVC.
