Not sure where you live in AZ but Quick N' Shine carwash in Gilbert is outstanding. They have a ton of craft beer in bottles PLUS they have about 35 craft taps! In a gas station! They're on the corner of Gilbert and Williams Field rd.

You definitely need to road trip it to San Diego. An easy drive to some of the best West Coast IPAs around. Alpine, Stone, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Pizza Port, Alesmith... And in August, Stone has their 18th anniversary beerfest. I went last year and it was incredible.

Bear Republic's Bear Racer 5 is awesome, as is Firestone Walker's Union Jack. You can get those easily at total wine. Seeing as you're in AZ (Phoenix area?) I have to recommend AZ Wilderness. Their Dos Cabezas IPA is my favorite (when they have it) but their Refuge IPA is considered their flagship and is always on tap. Head over, get a pint and a growler.

Dos Cabezas is awesome. Wilderness is a great place. Really good food too.

In the 60's in England I drank Worthington White Shield IPA. It was the best. I want to know why Coors won't bring it to us on a regular basis. Why buy an English brewer and beer if you aren't going to share it with the Cousins. Now, I drink Dale's, Sierra Nevada, Longboard. I love the hops.

Not sure what you get where you live, but here's my suggestions:

Dogfish Head 60 or 90 minute IPA. 60's more refreshing, lighter and hop forward; 90 is an amped up version balanced with a lot of malt to make it sweeter to balance the hops.

    Summit Saga IPA
    Founders All Day
    Founders Double Trouble
Schlafly Tasmanian IPA (It's not around right now, but definitely try it when it's released. It's great, juicy, and cheap.)
Boulevard Double-Wide IPA (This was the one that turned me on to IPAs.)

Also, any IPA Stone puts out is usually a winner along with Lagunitas. Anything from them isn't going to disappoint.

I went to Quick N' Shine last night! The one on Gilbert and Warner. They had Sculpin and it was amazing! I couldn't believe all the beer they had on tap, let alone the bottles. And they let you taste too. I was so excited! I cannot wait to try AZ Wilderness. Good to know they have good food too. I love Boulders on Broadway, but the food is so-so. Fries + duck fat + beer cheese? You really can't go wrong with that.

I am from the Phoenix area. I'm just a few miles from Wilderness and planning to go very soon. I will bring a growler when I go.

Unfortunately, pretty sure no Schlafly or Boulevard in Arizona, or at least weren't available when I was last there in 2011 :slight_frown:

You know I saw Apex in my bottle shop this past Fall along with Cafe 15 and picked up C-15 at the time and went back the following week for Apex and it was already gone. I'll have to be on the lookout for Apex the remainder of this year.

They've got a few distributors in AZ so you should be able to find them. Racer 5 is your best year 'round bet but the others always rotate throughout the year.

Also they aren't out west yet, but if you ever find yourself in FL or NYC or ATL Cigar City Brewing with Jai Alai and their Hopped on the High Seas series are awesome IPAs

I'm gonna respectfully disagree with this. When I was just starting to get into IPAs, somebody recommended this to me and I was completely turned off, as it was far too bitter. Who knows, maybe the OP will like this, but I certainly didn't. In my opinion, starter IPA's need to have less bitterness, and more fruitiness. Just my opinion, though. The first one that comes to my mind is Flower Power, which is less bitter, and more fruity. Unfortunately the OP doesn't get Ithaca. The one beer that I highly recommend that I believe the OP would like, and also gets, is Alesmith IPA. That beer is definitely in the top 5 for me in terms of IPAs.

I think you're right about starting out with fruity IPAs and that's why I think it started for me with Fresh Squeezed. When I tasted the Union Jack, after trying a few IPAs prior to that, I really liked it and could discern a distinct difference between that and the Fresh Squeezed. I had the Easy Jack a few days ago and it was so-so imo compared to the others I've had recently. I can honestly say, I haven't tasted any IPAs that I thought were too bitter, at least not since getting into IPAs. My husband thinks I've become fanatic about IPAs and I can't say I disagree with him.

Freshly squeezed is one of my favorites, you can buy Jai Alai and Oak Aged Jai Alai online, I'm sure you would like these.
