I now know what you mean about a black IPA tasting similar to a porter. I had a Mother Road black IPA at a beer festival today and the first thing I thought was it tasted like a porter. I'm not sure if that was because it wasn't very fresh or if I'm just not used to black IPAs, but it tasted like a poter to me.

After posting this, I just got Bell's Two Hearted again and remembered how amazing it is. Thank god for IPAs!

If I had found this thread sooner, I would have recommended starting with some local or more common Ipa's. Something like Sierra Nevada or New Belgium Ranger. You have had lots of great recommendations but lots of those beers are too much for someone new to Ipa's. It sounds like you have quickly gotten the taste for the better Ipa's and I congratulate you, both on your taste and you ability to find some of these "top 250" beers!

I Don't care which varietelas show up. The creme de la creme of the crop is just that. You can't improve upon Heady, Pliny, Kern's Citra, DREADNAUGHT etc....they are perfect beers for the subjective. move on people...move on...

Buy every IPA on the shelf for a year or two. Figure out it's not worth buying unless there's a bottle date or it's an in-demand seasonal. Decide you like Belgians, porters and regular pale ales better. Stop buying so many IPAs.

Still buy IPAs more often than you'd like to admit. DAMN IT.

Thanks! I figured asking here would lead me right to the good stuff. I was honored enough to get Pliny from someone here and it was my favorite IPA so far. Sculpin, Two Hearted, and Fresh Squeezed are my favorites I can get locally.

My go to everyday drinking IPAs are two hearted, loose cannon, lagunitas.

You should try most of Three Floyd's, they're fairly notorious for hopping up everything well. Saw them get hit on but here's some more:
    -Arctic Panzer Wolf
    -Dreadnaught (as mentioned)
    -Zombie Dust
    -Alpha King
    -Apocalypse Cow
-Gumballhead (Hoppy wheat but a great Amarillo profile and prefect for summer when IIPAs or DIPAs are sometimes too much)
    .....and plenty more rotating/seasonals

Let me know if you want to trade for any of these. Got pretty solid access to their stuff. Cheers!

Try some of the rye IPAs if you are lookng for something little maltier. I had a Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye the other day, it has all of the stuff hop-heads like (including citrus, pineapple, and mango notes) and still had something for me, a darker-beer fan.

Sierra Nevada Torpedo, and it's easy to find.

    Lagunitas IPA
    Firestone walker Union Jack
Sam Adams Rebel IPA (pretty good, mellow flavor, less of a hop/pine bomb)
    Ballast Point Sculpin
Dogfish Head 60 Minute (highly recommend this)
    Bell's Two Hearted Ale

I'm new to this myself, but so far the ones I've liked the most are DFH 90, DFH Burton Baton (I don't understand why this one doesn't get a lot more love here) and Lagunitas Sucks.
