Discovering Craft Brews. Farmington, MN

    Hi. I am new to craft brewing and craft beers. I enrolled in a Brewing and Beer Stewardship course at Dakota County Tech here in MN. Learning quite a bit about brewing and craft brews. Full disclosure, I mostly used to drink just Bud Light. Thats it. Glad I branched out and started trying craft brews. Hazy IPA's especially the "Cabin Daze" brewed by BigWood in White Bear Lake is my favorite. Anyway, we were learning about "off-tastes" with beer and yesterday I experienced my first, no kidding, obvious off-taste with a beer. It was a Foggy Geezer Hazy IPA and it tasted like I had wadded up a handful of bandaids and chewed on em for a bit. Chlorophenols, Im guessing. Really surprised me. How often do you folks come across such a blatantly obvious off-tastes?

    Hi, Jereamiah13, and welcome to the BA site. It sounds like your classroom work is teaching you a lot, but there is also a Homebrewing forum here on BA that can be a place to learn from those who have practical experience. https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/homebrewing.8/ Come and join in. Read thru past threads where the title sounds interesting to you.

    My experience has been rare to find a brewing defect in a beer. (Crummy beers because of a poor recipe pop up occasionally.) I've had some gushers that were infected and very tart beers, and I once experienced a beer with the classic butterscotch taste from diacetyl, but nothing recent. I think new breweries are more careful nowadays.

    It used to be brewpubs suffered from random bacterial infections in their lines and kegging. Or beers with residual sugar and bacteria in the bottles. But as PapaGoose says, less common. More common is deliberate craziness and beers that I find undrinkable, but at least honestly made.

    Excellent! Nothing more fun than exploring different craft beers. Similarly, I started out drinking Miller Light and anything cheap I could get my hands on. Anchor Steam opened my eyes in the early 90's. Like PapGoose and MacTrail, it's rare I find noticeable off flavors in craft beers. The worst offenders I've found were in some lagers, which we all know it's much harder to hide flaws in those. I enjoy a lot of beer styles but I'm partial to German and Belgian styles. Be sure to check as many of those out as you can. Cheers to exploring!

    Welcome! There are few decent to good breweries in the south metro, which had been a beer wasteland....forever. Just returned from Omni in Rosemount (two good beers) & North 20 is also good, Bald Man makes some pretty good stuff.

    Straight-up flawed beers are a lot less common than they were five years ago, but they're still around. You'll encounter most of these in new breweries that are still getting their feet under them but the big boys aren't immune from f-ups, too.
