I have been looking into using pure oxygen but seems that requires expensive tanks and regulators. Cheapest aeration kit I see is $38 at AHS. Is this a good deal or could someone point me toward something I can make?

You can use home depot disposable O2 tanks and a cheapo regulator, tubing, and stainless steel stone. I don't know what the kit at AHS is, but here's an example...

I get the idea you are opposed to gearing up for oxygen but keep quoting my posts, so I'll give it one more shot: If you use air only via shaking, aquarium pump, or AHS kit the maximum saturation achievable is 8ppm. That is clearly explained on the Wyeast website and is consistently quoted in other tech references. A big big quad will need more O2 molecules just like it needs more yeast cells. A big big starter will also benefit from adding oxygen. Yes, it can be brewed without adding O2 just like it can be brewed by pitching one packet of yeast without a starter.

To increase oxygen saturation pure O2 must be used and that's what commercial breweries do . . . you will not find a Trappist Quad that hasn't had oxygen added. I have found medical oxygen tanks (class D or E) to be a good solution. Buying one new with reg is ~$60-100 on Amazon/eBay. But used is the way to go . . . on craigslist/garage-sales they are much less. When filled they last a long time, actual cost of oxygen used is less than yeast nutrient.

.5 microns = smaller bubbles and less foam?

Where did you purchase yours? I've only come across 2 micron, that I recall.
