so another thread was addressing "rare" brews vs more available alternatives and the question came up about an alternative to DL. so my question is are they compareable at all? i've had meph and it's a huge stout, so much going on it's crazy. i've heard similar things about DL. so long story short, do i jump through hoops to get my hands on a DL, or do i stay home with some vintage meph and let everyone else wait in line?

most giant stouts like that don't taste very similar. you jump through hoops if you're curious. better/worse stuff is all subjective preference.

I had DL 11 very recently. It was my first try. I thought it was a lot like younger Mephistopheles. On that same note, the 06 Mephs taste absolutely delicious.

Dark Lord is nothing like Meph. Dark Lord '11 is a sugar bomb and Meph is very much like a hotter World Wide Stout.

Personally I would take a world wide stout over these two. I find that I can easily (relatively speaking) finish a world wide stout to myself whereas both dark lord and mephistopheles are sharers for sure even though they are different sizes. That being said I generally pick up all three when I can since Ohio still has that alcohol cap...

Dark Lord has a FG of 1.055 or something, and Mephistopheles should have somewhere around 1.030. That's a hell of a difference.

I've never had either (yet, have a bottle of each), but I would think that the difference would be pretty apparent.

I could drink the 11' DL without a problem. The 07' Mephistopheles I had in early 10' was so hot it was very difficult to drink.

2 different beers by comparison I think.
