DME amount in a recipe (~1.070)

    So I asked a question regarding DME this past week and loved the responses.

    I've been using BeerSmith to help me along but the one thing I really don't like is the "Equipment" tab. Same recipe and switching between different equipment makes the SG go from like 1.070-1.089. I'm not 100% convinced my equipment tab is set up properly so I'm slightly worried.

    For one recipe I was using:
    -1 pound steeped grains
    -4 Llbs. Light DME at boil start
    -6 Llbs. Light DME at 15 minutes

    Is 10 pounds of DME too much? One "Equipment" piece says the SG is 1.070 and I switch to another and it says 1.089. Both equipment pieces are within reason and I adjusted each for my personal setup.

    My #1 question is: Is 10 pounds DME too much in a 6 gallon extract batch trying to get an SG of around 1.070? Once I get this clarified I should be good to go.

    I put it into brewcipher and I get 1.069 with 9 lbs dme and 1 lbs crystal.

    What I use is this:
    Dry malt extract (DME) produces about 1.044 Specific gravity, per pound per gallon of water and liquid malt extract (LME) produces about 1.036.

    If you have 10# of DME you have a SG of 1.044 x 10 or 1.440 per gallon. Divide that (.440) by 6 gallons and you get 1.073333. So you're where you want to be. You should get minimal, if any, gravity points from your steeped grains.

    What did you get last time you brewed with extract? Volume into the fermenter is key to extract efficiency.

    i started with 2.5 gallons in the pot. filled my carboy with 2 gallons of water before adding the wort and was short just nearly a gallon to reach 5.

    so i lost slightly less than half a gallon

    (and i just realized this now, 2+ weeks later. I only filled my carboy to 5gallons whereas I was supposed to fill it with 6 gallons. no wonder my OG was higher. i was supposed to hit 1.070 but i was at 1.078. i blame the kit)

    I suspect you mean it's the key to Brewhouse efficiency when doing extract recipes. "Extract efficiency" per se only pertains to mashing, ironically.

    Yes, same with all grain...just a little play on the word "extract", which like you said has a different meaning when coupled with the word efficiency ..cheers
