The other critical thing to keep in mind about collaborations and sharing. As a friend of my used to say, in a Yogi Berra like statement, "Experts don't know what they know." Meaning that a description out of context tends to be "superficial" and leave out lots of critical details. Meaning that you have to put them in the context of a real situation/problem for their expert knowledge to kick in for show and tell and doing.

No all of the collabs you've seen over the past year have been fake.

With all due respect, you are hardly the most prolific spreader of the meme that the craft "movement" is an illusion, and that craft breweries have begun to treat each other with as much cut throatness as macro breweries treat craft, and each other.

Now I do not personally believe that, but some who do believevit know the industry much better than I do. So I thought I would ask.

Pretty sure Terrapin is doing a collaboration with (I think?) 7nth Sun on a mint julep sour. Sounds interesting enough

I think this thread should collaborate with one - i.e., be "merged" with one that is coherent

There are plenty of brewery collabs going on....have been, will likely continue

    What's the point here again??

I see collaborations serving a few different purposes.

For one, it gives breweries a chance to see a different approach to brewing and maybe pickup on some different techniques where the two breweries aren't' really competing due to distro footprint. Case in point, Devil's Backbone has collaborated with Ninkasi. I'm sure DBB learned a lot from Ninkasi and vice versa, plus they probably had a nice kumbaya moment or three.

Another purpose would be to help strengthen a name in an area (give cred basically) to a new player that doesn't necessarily have much name to start. For instance, Devils Backbone collaborated with Coronado not long after Coronado started distro'ing in VA. Ironically enough, the same distro house handles both accounts and that house has been knee deep in DBB from the start. Said house has also lamented for years that they needed a prolific west coast brewery in their fold (how they missed out on Alesmith is beyond me....) and previously tried such "powerhouses" as Napa Smith and.....well, that's about it. In this scenario it's quite possible it's less knowledge and kumbaya based and more for business reason. I'm sure that it was made very "worthwhile" for DBB to collaborate, plus it gave Coronado some nearly instant VA street cred to be seen "with" DBB. For what it's worth, the two breweries don't really share the same type of portfolio, so not a ton of head to head competition.

DBB has also collaborated with Green Flash, Meridian Pint and Heavy Seas (that I know of).

finally, collaborations to generate interest in two breweries renowned regionally (little bit nationally). Cigar City and Hardywood collaborated on Milkman and Milkmaid, and had release parties at both breweries. Perhaps a fun opportunity to share knowledge and create buzz on both ends while enjoying a nice bounce from feeding off each other's name for a moment, as neither are distro'd (CCB technically distro'd in VA but we hardly ever see it) in either area but have enough name to attract beer geek business. Same distro on both sides as well, so maybe some business angle played heavily as well.

So far in this thread I see that other Beer Advocate users -from their point of view as "outsiders" --individuals not employed in the brewing industry, in other words-- that there are more collaborations between distinct breweries than ever.
There are many levels to the subsidiary character of modern breweries -- see: Craft Brew Alliance, the Miller Brewing (now MillerCoors) interest in Terrapin, and so forth. The answer to the latter appears to be "yes", depending on how you want to parse it.

P.S. Kumbaya. Competition is natural, just as collaboration is also natural, but it doesn't preclude the business aspect of what a brewery must engage in, which more often than not induces a natural, competitive drive. Business 101.
