No in fact I would think it would be the other way - Pale Ales turn into IPAs.

No but kittens do turn into cats if you wait long enough.

In terms of American pale ales, I kinda see a spectrum that starts with APAs, then goes to IPAs, and then goes to DIPAs, and has some American barleywines at the very end. Seems like, based on my experience, IPAs are more hop-aggressive and slightly stronger abv-wise than APAs, but no style (that I know of) becomes another style as it ages or fades. It's just the aged and faded version of the beer it used to be :stuck_out_tongue:

APAs typically have a grain/malt flavor that IPAs don't have. And it's more than a simple matter of APAs having less hoppy characteristics.

They turn into urine after I drink them.

    Am I doing it right?

Pale Ale is the style and is simply an ale brewed predominantly from pale malt.APA, IPA, and so on are merely subsets of the overarching style.
The BJCP references should be regarded in the light of what the BJCP is for. It's to set categories for homebrewing competitions. It does not claim to be a definer of beer styles in the wider world.
