Not to get this very tangential thread even more off the rails, but oral health has much more to do with diet and hydration levels than it does with whether or not you brush and/or floss. I have never seen a properly carried out scientific study indicate otherwise. Clean teeth are not necessarily healthy teeth. I know that this flies in the face of everything that the ADA has been telling people, but it is accurate.

Heck no. But I do eat a box of Oreos before I go to the dentist cuz the hygienist is very cute.

Brush teeth when I wake up usually around 5:30am, never had an issue with minty beer since I never drink this early.
Regarding if I would brush prior to having beer, no. Brushing screws up the taste, ever notice your coffee is off tasting after you brush then cup 2 is better.
Cheers & keep them choppers healthy everyone :stuck_out_tongue::stuck_out_tongue:

    Here's an excellent meta-analysis, if you're interested:

Plenty of chocolate beers and even even a few with mint that should taste just fine and possibly even better after using mint toothpaste! But, for the most part, I agree with you.

Most of the time, yes. I will brush and then wait about 30-45 minutes while drinking a glass of water or two before I begin drinking. I've never run into any problems of beer tasting off or minty as a result.

No...I brush as soon as I get up. I don't even want to chew gum before I drink. If I did, I guess I would recommend brushing your tongue with a different, never used toothbrush just before and then rinse heavily with water.

They should make a flavor neutral tooth paste for the morning drinkers out there, maybe one could just use some baking soda or something

You guys are doing it all wrong. When I brush my teeth, I brush my teeth with a lager and if I need to rinse, I rinse with an ale.

This morning, I brushed my teeth with a munich dunkel lager and then I rinsed with a barleywine. Uhhh, so refreshing.

For the record I brush my teeth twice a day and it does not effect my beer drinking whatsoever. There are some mornings when I wake up after a long night of drinking hoppy beers. No matter how many times I brush my teeth and rinse, I am still tasting hops throughout the day.

Why the hell would you brush your teeth or use mouthwash before drinking ANYTHING? It'll taste awful, no matter what it is. Unless it's just plain water.

A compromise to brushing before beer drinking is to floss and brush without toothpaste, so no toothpaste flavors screwing up your tastes. Toothpaste is more breath freshener than a dental hygiene necessity for clean teeth. By far the most important aspect of daily teeth cleaning is the mechanical scrubbing, scraping, loosening, and removal of plaque and bacteria by brushing and flossing. Toothpaste's role in that is so minor, that if you skipped it one day, but still the brush and floss you're not doing your teeth any harm. If you want the toothpaste for breath freshener aspect, then if you're going out for beer, your breath is going to smell like beer really soon, so what's the point?

I agree with @Ranbot that brushing without toothpaste is the way to go. I do not floss because that can sometimes cause my gums to bleed. I also don't drink coffee or eat anything spicy or otherwise herbal/spicy/peppery, and certainly not anything that can get stuck between my teeth (more just because I hate that than anything else).

HOWEVER, the only time that I do that is when I might be tasting a beer that I might want to review. If it's anything else I couldn't care less.

FWIW, that's typically due to inflammation from bacteria brushing [and mouthwash] misses, but you have to keep flossing daily [i.e. removing the bacteria] for about a week for the inflammation/bleeding to stop.

It's the Jack (no middle name) Reacher way

PS: In case you have no idea WTF that is, its a fairly excellent book series by Lee Childs. Avoid the movies - Tom Cruise is a poor diminutive excuse for Reacher.

What we need is beer flavored toothpaste. I'll take mine in Rum BA Stout.

Searching on "Beer Toothpaste" found there's an song called "Beer & Toothpaste", which can be sampled in the link

Read the studies that I posted in #45 and #51. Your assertion isn't as written in stone as you might think.
