I'm sorry, but this thread seems absurd to my personal experience.
    • I brush my teeth once a day and never have dental issues. Visit the dentist every 6 months and everything is always fine. And I'm 60 years old, its not like I haven't experienced this only for a few years.
    • In the odd circumstance that my schedule is thrown off or I need and "emergency" brush if I do brush before eating or drinking ANYTHING its real weird. Taste is off the wall.
Do you comb your hair before drinking?

After reading a good bit of this thread and slogging through some "meta data", and having a brother as an oral surgeon and a brother in law as a dentist, I regularly floss, brush with an electric tooth brush, and drink plenty of water. I still have surviving dentition. No gum disease, no cardio-vascular issues, no diabetes. This is a peculiar thread for sure. Trouble is, nobody really likes dental jokes. It is a bleak territory in my search for humor everywhere....except for the standard English jokes, which are tired......

I wouldn't if I was planning to have a beer I never had before and write a review on the BA.
But I don't want other outside influences either like tobacco (I don't smoke anymore) and I don't want to smell someone else or their smoky body odor, or food cooking or someone's food sitting too close. Perfume and cologne can be overpowering. All those aromas can influence my beer tasting. Not so critical if it's a Lone Star or PBR, but a great craft beer I pay big bucks for, I want no outside taste modifiers. Toothpaste and a great beer? YUCK! Cheap beer? Maybe.
I wouldn't if I was planning to have one my expensive beers in the cooler.
A fine liquor would fall into that category too. I don't drink wine but a nice Port wine makes a nice after dinner drink on the rare occasion. Respect your neighbor and BEER!

Never! I learned as a child that the toothpaste made that morning OJ taste gross. Brushing before drinking would kill those citrusy IPA flavors.

Your poll and your question are asking two different things.

Would I brush my teeth before going to a brewery or a bar? No, that's silly. The beer doesn't care if I have minty fresh breath, and neither does the bartender.

Would I brush my teeth in the morning, even if I was going to have a beer soon after? Yes, I brush my teeth and rinse every morning as part of my general oral hygiene routine. I'm not going to skip brushing my teeth in the morning when I could just eat something and drink some water to remove the remnants of mouthwash.

The best way to clean your palate after tooth brushing, minty or not, is a well considered neutral beverage, like a delicious Miller High Life. It corrects the mind and includes purpose. The tooth paste is gone from the taste buds and a nice hoppy brew is just ahead! Problem solved.

I would definitely place hygiene above all else in this case with few exceptions. If it’s the beginning of the day —no question, you brush those bad boys and tongue brush too. Going to a brewery right now? Sorry bro, bad planning on your part. Enjoy the Hef de Menthe. This aside, say afternoon or evening, not as important. The ham sandwich from lunch isn’t nearly as offensive as the overnight stank. Better to protect the palette.

We have an "on suite" and then another bathroom. When I have to get up before my wife, I use the other bathroom so as not to wake her with morning bathroom routines. As a result, I have a second toothbrush and toothpaste. Works well. Probably will be like this for decades unless I suddenly end up with a job where I never wake up before her, or I am too tired to ever wake up before her when we have kids. All seem unlikely, so, it'll probably always be this way.

Thank you for making this thread. I have this dilemma quite often. i like to always have fresh breath, but my desire for my beer to taste proper is stronger. i brush 3x per day and i like drinking at any given point so a lot of times i have to decide if there is enough time for the mintiness to go away before i start drinking.

for me the mintiness lasts at least an hour. nothing tastes right in that window, and the longer i go, the better (more accurate) it tastes. this is not just for beer. im big into vapes and they dont taste right either after brushing. it seems that the more time that has passed since brushing, the better the consumable tastes.

i even went so far as to ask a cicerone what he does. he said he never brushes before drinking and kinda looked at me like i was crazy for asking such a silly question.

I'm not sure if exceeding expectations is the right way to phrase this. More like...

Well, have you ever brushed your teethe, then consumed something, and said "hey, that tastes off." You don't always know what it will be like, but you know it's not necessarily what you expected.

Just to torture myself I will brush my teeth (with commercial toothpaste) and then drink orange juice. But seriously ever wonder why sometimes folks rate a quality beer as a "drain pour"?
It's because they brushed there teeth right before drinking it.

my dad brushes with baking soda. I have picked up the habit too. It doesn't destroy your taste buds.

I brush my teeth a bare minimum of twice per day, usually three times, sometimes four. I never consider for a second what I am about to do. If my teeth/mouth feel dirty, I clean it. The toothpaste flavor goes away very quickly, especially upon eating or drinking something, including water.

Then again, I use "natural" toothpastes from the health food type stores. No SLS or artificial sweeteners or flavors. Maybe that's why it never bothers me, because when I use "regular" toothpaste, I feel like it coats my mouth for ages.

The real question is wether or not to wash your hands after going to the bathroom if you are about to have a beer?
