Do you have a method allowing you to circumvent bottle limits (whether you choose to use it or not)?

In regard to "per person" bottle limits, the wife counts, the 1 year old doesn't.

So what's the consensus here? If I bring my wife to a limited release, say BA Mexican Cake, that's not acceptable to some if she has no intention of drinking the beer? The rules are set per person, you don't have to fill out a waiver stating what you plan to do with it.

Yeah, she coming with me. Thanks sweetheart, you're the best!

I go by the stores set limits but I would go to the next shop and go by there limits as well. Kind of a grey area to me and I'll only do that if it's something I will personally enjoy.

I have never exceeded the limit, and I never will. If the limit allows multiple bottles, I will sometimes not take the full limit so that I can leave some behind for others.

While I voted "I have a guy" basically I do not skirt the limits, I just ensure I get my limit without standing in lines or chasing trucks. My two "guys" know I spend (a lot) of money in their businesses and I am also kind enough to share beers with both of them that I get in trades from other parts of the country that otherwise would not be available here. Again, I do not get more than my fair share, i.e. whatever the limit was but I do get it.

Polling non-traders vs traders will give you an entirely different result imo. In fact, I'm sure there are plenty of traders who will not even see this poll because they've never even looked within Beer Talk. To some of these people craft beer trading is a competition really & circumventing limits is something they don't even give a second thought.

I wish I there were an "Unlike" button.

This has always been a clear issue to me: Breweries set limits to get small quantities of beer in as many different hands as possible. Doing anything to circumvent that -- even if it's "legal" -- is being a scumball, ESPECIALLY for brewery-only releases. It doesn't show how smart or clever you are (and you're not, by the way; we're not talking about breaking into CIA headquarters, for god's sake).

Bringing along your wife/girlfriend/partner to get an extra bottle so you can drink one now and one later? Sure. Fine. You'll probably get instant karmic payback for that, anyway, especially if the line involved ungodly hours, crappy weather or both. However, it's always been clear to me that those who bring along mules (in whatever fashion) to score two, three, four or more times as many bottles as the limit do so merely for trading purposes. Those folks have taken beers out of others' hands selfishly and simply for their own personal gain. Plain and simple. Anything beyond that is rationalization.

I spend all of my money in one shop. I buy beer for several traders and myself. I spend a lot of money in said shop so because of this they are usually flexible with me. They know I have some thirsty friends in other states and are willing to let me buy a few extra of most things. I also share some of my beers with the guys at the shop which never hurts when it comes to building up a relationship based on beer. Because they know I am not hoarding beers for myself this relationship works and is beneficial to all parties.

Eh, every once in awhile I bring the wife along. She normally has a little of my beer when I do, but it's rare. Or I do one or 2 stores if I'm really amped and I don't think she will like the beer/isn't available. I mostly do it if I need to harvest an extra beer for a trade partner. Don't really look for a beer for "whale bait," I just have limited options in my area to make it right for people who are/ have been good to me.

I've yet to go change clothes in the car or blackmail a store employee.

I don't skirt the limits, I don't have anyone mule for me. Fairs fair, if it's one bottle I buy one, if it's three I buy three if I want.

You can definitely bring your wife. You can bring friends. If their willing to hang with you grest. What are you supposed to do stand around by yourself?
Bringing someone you have to pay is definetely a dick move.
In between is a gray area that is open to debate

There is no way the people who consistently use mules to get multiples of a rare beer are going to post in here. They have no morals, and they don't want to hear other people telling them they don't.

If i go to a release and a close friend is with me, i don't feel bad asking him/her to pick up an extra bottle for me. Problem is most of my friends like beer as much as I do, so we're all there picking up bottles for ourselves. More beer in my good-friends circle isn't a bad thing either...

Instant Karmic payback, lol. Whoever waits in line and gets a bottle fair and square can do whatever they want with it. Get over yourself. Breweries could specify one per household if they saw fit, most don't. If you endure ungodly hours then get your allotment just to hand them over to your loved one...you earned the right to do so. You could pour the thing out right then and there too, why? Because you waited in line longer than the guy behind you and followed the rules. Now you can do as you please.

I think paying someone to mule is ridiculous, but to each their own. They are obviously more invested in it than me

I'm okay with my allotment, but if it's something phenomenal, I might see if I can get it at another store in my area.

I bring my wife to limited releases because she likes beer and would be upset if I went without her and she didn't get a chance to have her own damn bottle. :grinning:

unfortunately i've never had, knowingly, access to a beer with a buying limit. and if i had then i've never crossed that line because i've never been turned down.

not that it's a big deal but i sparingly buy a case (or 2) of a beer I love that is not frequently available; seasonal releases, etc and i even feel bad about that. i think beer should be available to everyone! why hog it all to yourself
