That's a great typo. I wouldn't be wiping my cans down with one of those

Yeah a quick wipe maybe if needed, but generally no because I'm pouring and drinking them in glassware properly. I'm usually more concerned with status of the glassware.

Back in middle school I was listening on shortwave about how poor warehouse conditions can sometimes lead to rat shit on soda cans. From that point on whenever I bought a can of something, I always cleaned it off.

I tend to not wear my reading glasses when I get a beer so I would not notice any funk on the top of the can.

If I drink from the can, I always do a quick T-shirt wipe Round the opening. Pouring into a glass I don’t bother. Honestly my greater concern for germs is wondering how clean/ free from germs are glasses you are served in restaurants or taprooms? We just assume they are sterilized in a dishwasher but I’m sure the high school kids, undocumented citizens, and guys out on work release doing the dishes in the back aren’t prioritizing sanitation.

Yep. Every time just a quick dry bar towel down in the groove. I seldom see gunked-up cans but it happens. When grabbing a can from an ice-filled cooler I always dry off the top. An uncleaned ice chest can carry gastrointestinal bacteria like strephlitys or worse Group B strep (streptococcus) and liquid rust will be comin' out both ends of ya when you least expect it. Better safe than sorry.

If you're cleaning the can because of caution about pathogens, a T-shirt or a napkin won't do much. You all know that, right?

Next thing you're going to claim is that wiping one's hands on one's pants after urinating isn't adequately sanitary, either.:grimacing:

Plus a portion of the can top gets submerged in the liquid when opened.

All cans, beer and all others, get fully cleaned before use. I bet anyone who ever worked a food/bev. warehouse does the same.

I’ll be honest, I never considered this (outside of the obvious “that looks dirty”). Hell, even out of a cooler I’ve never done anything besides try to shake off the water.

My wife is quite clean, sometimes annoyingly so about some items, and I have never seen her consider this either.

Someone mentioned that the 4/6 pack holders should help protect the tops. I like that idea in general.

In the future I WANT to be more cognizant and always wipe my cans. …but if I am being honest with myself and with everyone else, there’s very little chance I will remember. The probability of getting sick from this has to be worse than getting in a car accident. I can’t imagine how many cans are consumed everyday that are never cleaned.

I always wipe down the tops of cans of food. But, oddly enough, I never thought of wiping down the tops of cans of beer. Unless, there's obvious schmutz on the top. Having looked at the OP's photo, I think I'll be changing that behavior pattern. Though, how impatient I am to get to the beer might come into play.

Only when they are visibly dirty, which is usually when I am drinking a cellared can.

But good points are made, it should probably be always.

Another check box goes to bottles for the win!

You gotta love the 4-pack carriers that cover the whole can top. They are more sanitary, very secure and don't strangle birds and marine life.
I really don't like the paper/cardboard carriers. Had one fall apart in a store on me once. I'm all for eco-friendly, but these are just stupid.

It's more about getting the big, obvious gunk off, not being operating room clean.

I'm typically more of a "don't worry about it" type so having said that, it has never really occurred to me to wipe cans off. Maybe I should at least look occasionally though.
