There is some discussion in the Modern Times thread that got me thinking about the topic of "drink local".

I wonder how big of a priority it is to BAs to purchase beer from what they consider to be local breweries.

Included is a poll but please further discuss this topic.

Of late I have been purchasing mostly local beer, both on-premise at local craft brewery taprooms but also packaged (e.g., canned) product as well (purchased at the taproom plus at local beer retailers as well).

    Cheers!

Important to me? To a degree. It’s much more about what they are providing me. My market sees vast distribution from Michigan breweries, providing me with extensive “local” options. So much so, that I don’t really need to venture outside my local market. Its about convenience of fresh options in conjunction with the desire to support local business. If I didn’t have good local breweries, more than likely my purchases would transition to outside of local options. Cheers.

I'd say somewhere between 85 to 90 percent of the beer I drink is local. When I say local I mean from breweries within 20 miles of my house.

The wife and I visit local breweries on average probably twice a month. I frequently buy to go beer on premise to stock the fridge.

Most of my grocery store beer purchases are from locals as well.

    Cheers!

p.s. If you can't find quality local beers in your area, I feel bad for you :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Harley, that is a very good, important point you bring up here.

If the breweries near me weren't producing a plethora of high quality products I too would likely purchase non-local beers.
I too feel sorry for those who don't have local breweries producing quality beers. Sometimes I do lose sight of how lucky I am in this regard.

    Cheers!

One more topic I probably should have mentioned in the OP is the aspect of beer freshness. Drinking fresh beer is important to me and is one more motivator for me to "drink local".

High quality and fresh: a twofer!

As do I. Something you’ve actually reminded me of in the past. Not all areas of the country are getting local beer only days old week after week. I’m extremely lucky in that regard and as you stated, is a big motivator for purchasing local. Cheers, my friend.

About 1/2 of the beer, I purchase is local. I'm lucky enough to live about a 5 min, drive from 3 breweries and 1 brew pub. They all brew good beer and 2 of them brew outstanding beers.
I consider local to be a short drive, less than an hour away.

The only time it's been important to me to buy local - i.e., I bought the beer because it was local, was during the ordered shut down. I was trying to do a little to help a few of the really local ones make it through.

Otherwise, many of my favorites happen to be brewed locally (i.e. in the metro area, broadly defined), but that is because they are favorites, not just because they are local.

IOW, I buy what I want, from wherever it comes, and brewed by whatever brewery.

Important to me because I feel like I’m supporting and participating in a cultural and economic aspect of my surrounds especially Philadelphia which I very much care about. I have recently been purchasing imports but when I’m doing craft it’s usually a Philly or south jersey brewer

For the most part, yes. Mainly because I know it's typically fresh and the quality in this area (in general) is pretty high. If the local quality wasn't that high, I would buy beer from elsewhere without a second thought, though. For some styles, especially Belgian abbey styles, I stick to imports, though.

Most beer in my fridge is local/localish (NC, MD...)... But when it comes to IPAs I find myself leaning heavy towards fresh local or what's really fresh/dated that I can find.

Most of my lagers and IPAs are local. Local breweries cannot quench my insatiable thirst for BA stouts and barleywines though. Not even close. So, probably 15-20% local for me.

I lean local and am fortunate enough to have a few very good places within 20 miles and within a couple of miles two excellent places that my nonbeer drinking gnome will go to because she likes the chow (Fat Heads and Brew Kettle).

Added to this thread should be the draw of draft beer. I love to try draft versions of bottled beer and that pushes me towards local. Being able to nab fresh cans and tapped beer weighs heavily in my calculus of what I buy.

None of the choices quite accurately match my answer.

I'd say my "drinking beer" is local. Meaning, the stuff I usually have stocked in my fridge is local. And by local, that really means my in Missouri.

I mostly drink local at various breweries wherever I happen to be.
That is the majority of what I drink.
I do have a thing for imports, German Lagers and Belgians, and drink those when I can find them on tap, which is rare.
    Fresh beer is good beer!
    Cheers!

Local beer is often (but not always) fresher beer. Plus where I live it’s often better beer. So yeah, if I have a choice between a local IPA and one that spent a week traveling across the country, I’ll usually go for the local option. But I’m not, like, obsessive or religious about it.

I buy a mixture of out of state and local beers. I have been favoring local beers lately tho.
