Isn't Parish Reve good? I have not tasted it but most of their beers I had are decent.

I drink about 95% local if Sierra Nevada and New Belgium in Asheville, and Oscar Blues in Brevard fit that criteria (they are brewed here). I love SNPA as my staple and often buy mixed packs of Sierra Nevada and New Belgium at Costco. I drink a good bit of Foothills and Little Brother from here in the Triad. Otherwise, I pick and choose some new beers and old favorite Belgians at Bestway on Walker Ave.

Hundreds of small, mostly great craft breweries within a 70 mile radius of me provide 99% of the beer I drink at home and mostly out locally as well. Sometimes a bar or restaurant will have something interesting from elsewhere that I'll try. When traveling I always drink local wherever I've stopped. I've enjoyed some great/interesting/uh beers all over the world.

Obviously there's some wide ranging definitions of "local" going on. I drink probably 35-40% of my beers from breweries in my county or a neighboring County (but my county is larger, by land mass, than several east coast states). If we zoom out to Northern California we are probably talking about 75-85%.

I would say that it's mostly a function of price/freshness, although i do recognize the value of having local breweries and as such I have and do spend money supporting local breweries that aren't "the best", but are doing a good job and I dont want them to disappear.

The shitty local breweries that I don't buy from continue to thrive though, so my economic theorizing is probably faulty

Depends on the meaning or "local". Here in boonies we have one brewpub in town - good food, mediocre beer. The next closest local had good food and several decent beers. It was sold and the goodness didn't transfer. Next closest are 30 miles away - one with good food and good beer, it morphed into a college bar. The other is just mediocre.
Today, while in Akron, OH, (Two hour drive) I stopped at Hoppin' Frog (Haul hint!) and picked up a great selection of excellent brews.
Cleveland, OH, is also about a two hour drive. There I used to drink at Indigo Imp, now long gone. Great Lakes has some good beers but the crowed bar and the absence of parking removed that choice. Although when I'm in the Cleveland area and Mrs. Lizard and I plan on eating, it's usually at Fat Heads (Good food and mostly excellent beer) or The Brew Kettle (Good food and usually excellent beer).
When traveling and stopping at restaurants, I always ask for local beer - a server in Texarkana, TX, said "We have Yuengling". When I'm at my brother's home in New Braunfels, TX, I spend several hours every other day at 5 Stones, about five miles from his house, drinking local.
So local depends, mostly on the relative position of and the quality of the beer.

I drink about as local as it gets. Made in my brew kitchen and drank in my Man cave.
As far as purchasing beer, as long as it's a style I'm looking for, it could come from Uranus if it's made well enough.
I've been surprised when after buying a beer, pouring it, tasting it, then reading the can/bottle label info that it was made nearby. It's happened a few times.
I really don't keep track of every little brewpub that opens locally, because I don't get out much and more often than not, the beer just isn't that good.
Nowadays it seems like every Homebrewer thinks they can run a full scale operation when they have no clue what they're doing and how bad their beer is.
Snitz Creek, Mt.Gretna, Cold Springs Inn, Gettysbrew, The Farm Brewery across from the Round barn near Gettysburg, and I know there are many more, just can't remember the names.
Thin, watery, no head, over hopped you name it, they all seem to screw it up.

Bob, have you tried the Texas brewed Yuengling Lager? My sister had some at her house so I drank one. FWIW it tasted just like a PA brewed version.
Yup, 5 Stones is a great place with very tasty beer!

Lots of very good beer being brewed in Hill County.

    Cheers to 5 Stones!

I drink 'mostly local' which basically means Michigan beers. And when I travel, my trips generally are pub crawls, so I'm drinking as 'local' as it gets at brewery taprooms.

However, my drinking of 'local' beers is changing a bit since I've started getting into NA beers. There's only one brewed in Michigan, and it's from a brewery that makes crummy beers, so I doubt that I'll be buying it just to stay local.

I definitely helps when you live near some great breweries. My state only has a few that I support but they are really good. So... a little bit of both for me.

I buy local as much as possible, but for me local includes, Illinois and the border states, including Michigan. I cant find a year around stout brewed locally so my exception is Old Rasputin.

That's part of the problem. I can walk where I live in a highly urbanized area to a 3 breweries in half an hour.

I can still get into a car in 30 minutes, cross 2 state lines, and have NUMEROUS breweries to choose from to buy "locally".

What is the situation in more sparsely populate areas? Is the scenario I mention above applicable? I am guessing it's probably not the norm.

If you live in a big state but buy from a brewery that makes beer in that state but makes it 150 miles from where you live is that still "local"..

I mean it get ridiculous up to a point.

Enjoy yourselves and have good beer all.

Ethan, as I discussed in post #58:

"Yeah, I figured this sort of thing could be an 'issue' and I purposefully stated in the OP (with emphasis in bold this time around):

"I wonder how big of a priority it is to BAs to purchase beer from what they consider to be local breweries."

I have zero interest in defining for others what "local" means and therefore would prefer for each BA to determine this for themselves."

Feel free to define what "local" means to you.

Perhaps a 'metric' which could be helpful would be beers that you can typically find fresh (again you get to define fresh here). One of the benefits of drinking local is being able to regularly buy the beer in fresh condition.

    Cheers!

I am in the “really don’t care” group, but this one is so local I passed the brewery on my way to the grocery store where I bought it. Will County’s Rocket Queen.[IMG]

I'm not going to drink any-old-local-beer just to drink local. I drink local when it sounds like I'll like it based on description, reviews, and experience with the brewer. I don't often find local beers that I like, but have had a few.

When I buy , which is seldom, I buy local 50% of the time.
But I have yet to find a good to great imperial stout that is readily available that is made in Vt. Also not a fan of hazy juice bombs, sours or wild ales, so on occasion SNPA or torpedo ipa wins.

I always aim at local, which to me means Southern California. Freshness is not always guaranteed - the beer manager at the Trader Joe's I shop at made a major buy of Modern Times just before the seasonals came out, and her previous purchase was on the shelves for 90 days.

I'm really busy so it's hard for me to go out of my way to buy direct even though I have clients blocks away from Smog City, Monkish and the Bruery. Breweries don't tend to be open at 7:00AM. I did go by a really small outfit named Upshift Brewing today since they were close to my barber's and I happened to be there in the middle of the day.

That said, I also like all things Belgian.
