Do you drink the dregs?

Discussion in 'Beer Talk' started by PourMore, Oct 22, 2015.

?

When my beer has settled particles in toward the bottom of the bottle, I tend to...

  1. pour the whole beer into my glass and drink it all together.

  2. pour only the clear portion into my glass, and the rest goes down the drain (or to brewing project).

  3. pour the clear portion and drink that for a while, then add the rest to observe any flavor changes.

Dregs of a bottle: I honestly don't care. Thy will be drank.
Dregs of a keg: Backwash from the bottom of a keg... just blech.

No! Basically, only hefeweizen would I drink the dregs, but at that point they're not really dregs.

How does a keg get "backwash?" :grinning: Are you speaking of a home-brew keg with settled out yeast? In that case, the vitamin B is worth the turbid goodness!

I do and I love 'em. With most 750's, you essentially get 4 glasses. The first two are dreg-free, so you get that if you want. I go all-in with the last two pours. I usually enjoy it (some, like Fou Foune = divine), but occasionally not as much.

im not that scientific yet to drink clear pour first, then add rest later, but that could change as I learn more about drinking great beer. but for now, pour and drink up all contents !

Yeah, I too love big bottles with the final pour with all the yeast and muck in my glass. That's the best IMO, most of the time. A few off beers with the bottom muck, but rare.

With Sante Adairius Wild ales, having them the day of bottle release when they are still cloudy as hell is always the best. If not, mix the bottle up a touch to get the sediment in there. Adds so much of any added fruit's and adds texture and mouthfeel.

Pour the whole beer unless it doesn't all fit in the glass, I'm not worried about the "dregs."

Drink the dregs! Drink the dregs!

It's a tongue twister if you repeat it enough times fast. Eventually it becomes "dink the regs" or "rink the degs."

pour the clear beer in to the glass then drink the last bit/sediment from the bottle/can. Though if its aged i typically drain pour the sediment, too rough for me.

Yup! Especially if there is yeast in the sediment. Yeast has a flavor, which will impact the flavor/finish of the beer (mostly in a bad way). If it's not a hefeweizen, do like you said- drink it separately.

Sorry I'm gonna Grandpa up here. Back in the old days we were taught not to do it. Nobody wants that yeast bite they said. I used to cringe when I'd hand my bomber to a cashier and she'd shake it scanning it and set it on its side as it glides down the conveyor. Since Heady though, and other beers in cans I've become less worried about a little cloudiness.

Dregs are still beer and you should always finish every beer. There are sober kids in Africa finish your beer.
