I stay far away for two reasons: I can't see myself enjoying it when I feel like garbage, and I want to rehydrate and not the opposite.

Recently had the flu and still am not able to taste and smell exactly the way I used to. recovery does take a long time generally and alcohol is no fun and no help when you don't feel well.

These threads are arguably the most annoying and obvious ones that come up every three months.

Durrrrrr, do you want to get better or make yourself worse. Answer that, and then drink or don't.

I would say that, depending on the affliction, you generally don't enjoy it as much due to clogged nasal passages, general ill feeling and other factors. If it's a bad stomach flu or food poisoning I would definitely avoid beer, however a touch of the flu or common cold where one can eat is a bit different. If you can hold down something lighter, it may help you sleep a bit.

Avoid alcohol when sick. It only makes it worse.

Beer just doesn't taste right if I am sick with anything except a minor cold. I have had bad colds though that are almost as bad as flu and can drink nothing.

If you have one or two it's not going to hurt. Think about it this way, plenty of cold/cough medicines have alcohol anyways, you'll be fine. Speaking from experience, I remember plenty of times drinking with a cold and I do not recall there being any difference in recovery time. Just don't overdo it as a hangover will obviously not make you feel any better, but no I do not believe a couple of beers will cause a longer recovery time.

I usually hold off the drinking when I'm sick. It's not going to make me feel any better, and I'm not going to enjoy it as much.

Going a few days without beer isn't a big deal. If it is, you might have a problem.

if it makes you feel better...drink away (in moderation)

stay balanced for hydration and recuperation...but small intakes to address psychological and physical needs, I see no issue with the quest for comfort

you do what you feel is best/necessary for you, accept the various perspectives as requested and forge own direction accordingly...appreciate the diversity of opinion

(previous post deletion understood......cathartic in nature, I suppose)

The different perspectives in this thread are extremely entertaining to read. To some it may seem like a completely ridiculous question, but hey, I wasn't talking about pounding 6 bombers of imperial stouts.. just thinking about drinking 2-3 over the span of a few hours. I personally don't ever recall drinking when feeling sick, as the above posts mentioned; your sense are dulled and you won't feel good after. However, I don't have the flu and my stomach feels fine. Yes, I have a strong head cold, so I'm kind of on the cusp of wether I should or shouldn't. I decided not to at the end as I was just too tired to be able to enjoy any.

Yeah, I'll have a couple of beers, if I'm in the mood for 'em, when sick. Nothing special, just shelf beers. It might not help, but it really doesn't hurt. With the caveat of watch what medicines your taking.

One thing I never do is mix any kind of medicine with alcohol. Even an Advil. I'm kind of a stickler with that. Why risk any kind of liver damage?

Threads merged. If you're sick, maybe take a break from drinking and focus on getting better. And, as always, seek proper medical advice.
