Given the audience you are seeking advice from, you will get a very biased opinion. Any rational thinking person would say drinking while sick is a bad idea.

If I have a sore throat and/or nasal congestion I usually stay away from IPAs since my taste buds and palate are usually not working real well. A good, hearty stout on the other hand...

Exactly this. If I'm wanting beer, a general "cold" doesn't affect my enjoyment of beer. However when I have had the flu before, I didn't even want a beer, and it wasn't even an issue of whether I should or shouldn't, I just couldn't. Listen to your body.

Seems like every time I get sick now (which is a lot with my toddler Petri dish) it also goes to my sinuses then I loose my sense of taste. So drinking beer when sick is usually just a no no since I can't enjoy it. No some strong whiskey and relax on the couch, not the worse idea.

Again I am not talking about the flu or anything where alcohol is a really bad idea. Also alcohol dehydrates toy, so make sure to extra rehydrate which you shield already be damping up being sick. Flush the system.

Also, watch out mixing meds and beer. Some combos just make you more sleepy etc, some can cause liver failure... Pick your battles.

It's pretty simple, alcohol in any form will slow down your recovery time. That's all. If you want to get better quick then don't drink, but if it doesn't matter to you how fast your body fights it off, then go for it.

When I was younger I was convinced that alcohol killed the nasty germs. What's odd is that I continue to believe it. But with lots of water, orange juice, sleep, and with The Three Stooges. Strong medicine!

My view on this is fairly simple.

I drink beer because I really enjoy drinking a great beer, tasting it, smelling it, looking at it, pouring it, reviewing it, either for this site or for myself.

Drinking while I am sick is completely pointless. I won't enjoy, It might extend my illness, which means more days of not enjoying beer.

But that's just one man's opinion.

I know people say to abstain while sick but I really have found whiskey to be beneficial when I have a cold... and lots of tea with lemon. Beer doesn't taste right when you're sick so don't waste your good beer on a cold. I had a few colds this past winter and I drank copious amounts of green or oolong tea with honey during the day and a few hits of bourbon in the evening.

Alcohol dehydrates you. You need all the hydration you can get to become healthy again. Then drink beer!

Absolutely I still drink! But, like @garyloveman mentioned, it does dehydrate you; I take care to drink a ton of water, too.

But seriously, when I'm feeling under the weather, drinking definitely helps me feel better. I may not have 100% of my taste or smell senses, and it may not be perfect, but it definitely helps - at least psychologically, and I'll take anything I can get when ill. :grinning:

As a microbiology student: I really don't recommend it. You could. You would live and heal up. Assuming what you have is a (relatively) harmless transient pathogen. But why do that to yourself? Your sense of taste is off. You're not feeling well. You wouldn't enjoy it as much as you will in a week from now. Not mention, why willingly drink diuretics when you know your body needs fluids. If you are running a fever you need to increase your water intake, and eat nutrient rich food. You're body is cranking up your metabolism, to increase your temp, to kill invaders. Don't impair it's ability to keep you alive. Throw the beers in your fridge. Or put them in your closet if the temptation is great. Or go ahead and drink them anyway. Your call.

Drink electrolyte and save the beer for when you can enjoy it. Hop tea might help if you get the urge.

Don't drink anything you haven't had before or will never be able to try again since the flavors will be muted.
