NO!!! I don't even try them any more. It's unfortunate but to me they are written off for the time being. Give it a decade. I might try them again then.

I love smoked beers. But they need to be really smoky like standing next to a bonfire kind of smoky.

I've tried Stone Oak Smoked Old Guardian and Yazoo Sue and I drainpoured them both, so I'm guessing they're not my style. There was an acrid, almost sour taste to both of these that really was not to my liking.

If they actually smoked the malt over fire using quality wood or lava....
If they added liquid smoke.. heck no!

Along the same vein - if you don't like Alaskan Sm Porter, you don't understand rauchbier. Love that burned Alder!

Yes. Yes I do enjoy them. There's a reason why Alaskan Smoked Porter comes in a 22 ounce bottle; a 12 ounce bottle wouldn't be enough!

Finally, a thread I can really weigh in on. YES. Smoked beers are some of my favorites. I've only moderately liked the more subtle smoked beers: your schlenkerla's and stone/alaskan smoked porters. I have tried just about every smoked beer I could get my hands on, and if you really want smoke, try a Yeastie Boys Rex Attitude, a Nogne O 100% Peated, or brew your own. Both the Rex and the 100% claim to be undrinkable, and by "undrinkable", they mean,"so intensely full of flavor you won't understand how it's possible". I may get some hate for liking those, but I thought they both were exciting and unforgettable. Nothing else on the market even comes close to the intensity (except maybe Laphroaig cask strength).

Smoked beer? Yes please! I don't like the overpowering ones, however. It takes a deft hand.

It depends, I've had more smoked stouts/porters than I have lagers, and I generally prefer the former. Duck Rabbit's Smoked Porter they put out recently is top notch.

I love smoke, in part due to my love for Laphroaig. Thus, Olvisholt Brugghus Lava is delicious among so many others (e.g. Alaskan Smoked Porter, Evil Twin Ashtray Heart, Norwegian Wood, etc……..)

I'm a little late to the party, but I'll just say I'm a fiend for smoked beers. Jack quoted the article that cautioned against too much smoke, but for me I've yet to find a beer that's too smokey. I even enjoyed Yeastie Boys Rex Attitude, which is brewed with only peated malt.

That's not to say I can't appreciate more subtle offerings, because I love those as well. And I love the true Rauchbiers (smoked lagers) as well as smoked versions on other styles. Lately, I've been buying up all the four-packs of Weyerbacher 15 that are still -- somehow -- on store shelves. It's a three-year-old smoked imperial stout that is probably in my top five of all beers, not just smoked beers.

I wish so much that a craft brewery would brew a smoked lager in the vein of Aecht Schlenkerla's, and sell it in an affordable six-pack format. Such a beer would be forever in my fridge.

I like them if the smoke flavor isn't too pronounced. If it's mild, I tend to enjoy the beer. I've tried a couple that tasted like pure smoke, and I couldn't enjoy them.

I love em. All the Aecht variations. Stone Oak Smoked Old Guardian was awesome too.

In fact...I like them better than sour beers any day! Flame away.

Yes. I have only had the Stone Smoked Porter and Oak Smoked OG. Loved both of them, with Oak Smoked OG being one of my favorite beers. Oak Smoked OG uses the smoked malts to offset some of the bitterness leaving a smooth, extremely drinkable beer.

Let's see, I've had a handful of smoked beers and they are largely hit or miss for me.

First I ever tried was the Schlenkerla Marzen and it was good. Not a beer I'd have just anytime, but in the right situation/mood, absolutely. The Schlenkerla Weizen, however, didn't do it for me--it tasted like I was drinking liquid campfire, and that impression lingered with me long after I had finished drinking the beer. Not sure if the wheat beer base just didn't play as well with the smoked malt, but it struck me as far less balanced. I didn't finish it and wouldn't drink it again if someone gave it to me for free. I've also had the Helles Lager from Schlenkerla and thought it was tasty. The smoke was subtle and complimented the lager quite nicely.

In terms of American offerings, I've had three that I can remember:

    • Stone Smoked Porter - good, but wasn't terribly smoky, I didn't think at the time
    • Stone Oak Smoked Old Guardian - really good, but when I had this it was near the end of a beer festival, so take my evaluation with a grain of salt
    • 4 Hands Smoked Pigasus - just had this one for the first time last week and was really impressed. It might be my personal preference when it comes to the style, but it does have maple syrup, so it's not really a "traditional" smoked beer. But regardless, the sweetness really balanced quite well with the smoked malt.

In short; yes. Longer answer is that I have actually enjoyed them more after being vegetarian. I haven't eaten bacon in years, but having a nice smoked beer is soo nice once and a while...
