While I've retired at a tender, young age, the correct answer is "yes" for everyone. Think about it. But, to your point, I never drank before work in my 20's. My rule of thumb was to quit by 8pm the night prior. That worked very well for me.

Before work? Noap. The success of my worklife depends in part on not having the top 10% of my mind fogged by alcohol. Even one beer has a slight but noticable disruptive effect on physical eye-hand coordination and mental agility.

How about before posting? Is it noap or nope? Just teasing...

    Cheers, sir.

While it's poor judgement for sure, it isn't necessarily an indication of alcoholism until you can't stop yourself from doing it. Just like having a breakfast beer on a day off is not necessarily an indication of alcoholism. It's way more complicated than that.

My post was disagreeing with the assertion that "drinking before work is a sign of a problem". Sign of a habit? Sure, but so is looking forward to them after work. As is wincing out ways to coffee in the morning. Whether or not the habit is problematic is different for every single person/situation, and in many ways unknowable.

Never-- I drive machinery and trucks. I'm on call and work other shifts . I'm subject to taking a blood test at work if I'm involved in an accident or incident. I love my job and my job loves me. I can drink after work.

Then people that have champagne or Mimosa with breakfast are all alcoholics too? You're a licensed addiction counselor qualified to make that diagnosis without talking to the patient? Wow you're amazing.

I sometimes put Irish cream in my coffee. Before work. Should I stop posting here and find a 12-step forum instead?

Occasionally I'll have a couple beers before work, not enough to get tipsy mind you. More often than not, I do not drink before work. I guess it all depends on my mood, If I'm feeling cranky I'll have one or two, If I'm doing a beer tasting that day, I refresh my memory on how it tastes and what you could compare it to. I don't find it unprofessional as long as you're not wasted and it doesn't impede your ability to do your job correctly. I remember on Easter a few years back I got a phone call from my boss (Owner of company I work for) asking me to come in and I told him "I've been drinking and have a really good buzz going so I don't think I should" and he told me to "come in anyway, you won't be dealing with customers or anything so you'll be ok.". So I went in and hated myself for it, never again!

I work part time at a brewery and still don't drink before or during my shifts. I like to keep my beers as a reward for my hard work after I'm done. Work hard, play hard.

Damn there's a lot of high-minded individuals on this website. What a thoroughly American point of view.

High minded? Well if you take your career serious and have responsibilities such as kids then I would not call that high minded I would call that common sense. Sorry, drinking a beer at 5am before I take the kids to school and then going to work is not really top of my list. Not only is it stupid, its wreckless.
    Cheers.

American point of view? That is an odd statement. I would consider it a normal point of view from anyone who is responsible and has common sense.....
