I'm looking at pictures of beer before work on the "What beer are you drinking now?" thread....

    Some of them are, yes.

It’s not a black and white situation but if you’re drinking beer for breakfast, it’s not a GOOD sign. If you’re making a habit of it, it’s a worse sign.

Also, the bar for responsible alcohol consumption should probably be a little higher than “technically doesn’t qualify as alcoholism”. You can still cause yourself tremendous harm with alcohol even if you’re not actually an addict.

I'm a working shop foreman. Drinking before pulling a cab off a truck or dropping $12000 worth of injectors into a truck would be disastrous.

Not everyone works in the morning. Drinking a beer before work can be having a beer with dinner if you work the night shift, as some of us do. To paint everyone with the brush of "You're an alcoholic if you do ___" is not v cool m8.

Anyway, let's lighten up the mood. The people who built the pyramids drank beer during and before work and look what they accomplished! :joy:

I start work at 5:00 am, too early for a beer. However, back in the day, mid to late 70's we would go the the pub for lunch and always had an Old Style, it was no big deal then, but the whole world has changed, not necessarily for the better, IMHO!

As I'm a teacher the answer is a definite no. But, I know a good amount of people that work in oil and gas shipping in Houston, and they start every Friday morning at 5:30 with some shots in the office. This goes from brokers, managers, directors, and so on up the chain.

I haven't lived old enough to remember the 70s, I actually wasn't even born but this is what I hear from either my parents or older acquantainces.. the Blue Collars would hit the bar early in the morning before their 8 hours shift only to go back there for a couple more drinks (beer, wine or otherwise). It was socializing... of course many of them also had a family, women then were (forgive me!) Generally more at homes raising children.

You are right things have changed and evolved anywhere alcohol is permitted anyway. I believe that people drink ''less'' these days but better, better wines, better beers, and for the better ''drinking and driving'' is less and less common.

So I would say changing for the better. I still socialise on occasion for a pub with friends or the rare dates.

Pros and cons then and now. Cheers.

Never. Not judging, but just doesn't seem like such a good choice if one's goal is job retention, regardless of your occupation.

The only time I'll have a drink "before" work is if work keeps me out past midnight. I work a 9-5 office job and have no desire to drink in the morning during the week. If I did have the desire to drink at that time during the morning before work I'd consider it a problem.

I do enough drinking as it is that I don't need to fill every waking hour with it.

I think it definitely depends on the culture in your workplace. If coming to work after a couple beers is considered unacceptable in your workplace, and you choose to have beers before work anyway, I would say you are prioritizing drinking above keeping your job, which may be indicative of a problem.

This question is highly dependent on what you do for a living. Does your occupation require that your judgement is not impaired?

As an engineer, I can not do my job effectively with any impairment of my judgement.

As much as I love great beer, it is reserved for my downtime.

Politicians don't use good judgement, so guess they'd be OK.

Honestly, I think if politicians had a drink before going to work, they may forget they belong to a political party, and put America before party, and we would all be better off.

I don't start work until 3:30 PM, so sometimes I'll have a beer around noon with my lunch. Since I voluntarily moved to second shift 3 years ago, I have noticed I don't drink near as much as I used to.

When I worked in retail, I did it occasionally. No longer since I'm in a professional position now - drink a lot less in general now.
