Yes, Arlene at By the Bottle (www.bottledbrews.com). She's never recommended me a beer I didn't like (I like most, however). Super friendly, knows her shit. You can tell she is passionate about beer. Gives me deals once in a while too. Portland/Vancouver people check them out. Doesn't beat Belmont Station as far as selection but a great little shop that's on my way home from work.

Definitely do, and it makes finding tough beers a hell of a lot easier.

This was the scene last week:

    Me: *walks into beer store*
Beer guy: Hey, TTAmod, I have some KBS and BCBS in the back. Do you want any?
    Me: Sure, I'll take some.
Beer guy: *Goes to back and brings out said beer*
Me: *Goes to register and buys said beer. Having a beer guy rocks*

No. People in RI generally arent very friendly. I mean for example, this one employee seemed really nice and we had a short chat about a specific beer but when I saw the guy again the next time he didnt say a word to me. Not even a "hey hows it going, man." It just seems most people wont talk to you unless you talk to them first.

I have a guy who sets me aside stuff all the time, and i never ask him to. He also has started carrying some beer specifically per my request, which is awesome. And as everyone has said, take care of them, they'll keep taking care of you.

I have a guy where I get my growlers filled who treats me like Norm. Whenever he sees me coming and isn't too busy, he positions himself behind the highest ABV IPA tap with his hand on the handle and a glass underneath it and waits for my thumbs up. He also tells me when something special is coming in or when there's something on sale. Thanx, Vinny for being there so I can write about you.

That's a pretty damn good hook up!

I don't really have a beer hook up (besides maybe the local forum that gives good info on where stuff has landed in the area,) but I just pester the guys at the local spots and check up on new inventory often. I wish I had a direct reliable info source lol.

Unfortunately the shop I'm closest with does not hold bottles for anyone, loyal or otherwise. Good terms with them, and he gives me the inside scoop, and we even share beers! but he won't hold bottles, always has been first come first serve. I respect that, but I still get a little bitter.

Thinkin' its a New England thing but I don't take offense. However, I will agree, if you talk to them first, you'll be surprised what awesome conversation you can have.

Also, drive up to Freeport, Maine this summer if you get a chance and check out the new Maine Beer Company facility. I consider them very friendly.

My beer guy goes by the name of "Aaron." That's all I'm allowed to say about him, he's kinda weird like that .

His name is Jim, nice guy, knows what I like. For example, " We got only 6 bottles of BA bigfoot, I put one aside for you" nice. Same with some other stuff, lets me know when new/ special beers are expected. I am there almost every day.
My other beer guys are women. Suzanne and Kate at the Craft Beer Cellar, Belmont, MA. Worth the trip, really know their stuff, great customer service etc. They also have tastings most days wed-sat. The entire store is beer, one small shelf for wine and some cider. Did I mention great customer service?

Bar manager at a place I frequent. We regularly talk about beer when I'm there. He said any time I want him to try to get a beer in stock, just let him know. He's also cut me some deals on things before, like beers he wants to lower his stock of.

So, perhaps a stupid question, but is this really the Rob that the other poster was referring to? Or are you making a statement that this place is on the same level as the description of Rob above?

I ask because Wichita is totally within road-tripping distance for me. My wife is going to hate you for showing me that.

Is it bad that my "beer guy" is about 45mins from my house? One of the coolest guys in Chicagoland.

Given that I am a beer guy, I hope that my customers enjoy the help I give them!! It's a lot of fun to talk beer/industry with other beer geeks and even those who are just learning about craft beer
