For my taste, it's in the same category as the Brett IPA. Like barrel aging, adding Brett to an IPA just destroys the characteristics of an IPA I usually want to taste, replacing with a nasty sour funk. To each their own. I'll try Doom someday, however.

Of course at one time all IPA was barrel aged.

Only one I've tried so far is Doom. Before trying it I wasn't sure I would like it, but as it turned out I thought it worked well. The BBAing added another layer of goodness I that enjoyed. (Though I wish every bourbon barrel were used for porters and stouts.)

My feeling exactly, although I was going to be a little more snarky, like "This is why IPA was so unsuccessful in India in the late 1700s/early 1800s."

I've had a few aged in different kinds of barrels and liked them more than I thought I would. I've also had a few I'd call unpalatable dreck, but in the hands of someone that knows what they're doing (Founders, Odd Side, Cigar City), I think the barrel adds an interesting kick. There's a place near me, On Tour Brewing, that ages one of their west coast IPAs in gin barrels, and I think it's outstanding. I thought it had a really complex interplay between the hops and juniper, but realize that it's not going to appeal to everyone's palate. I'd love to try a tequila barrel IPA at some point, but haven't come across any.

I don't think I have tried any. Would love to get my hands on a bottle of Doom to try it out though. For Science!

So, if the IPA is more of an Old Ale or a Barlewine, it works. If it's the hop-forward, malt-neutral beer that most are used to, then not so much.

    Agreed.

No. Mild was sold unaged. That's what mild originally meant.Although of course it was an Ale and not a Beer.

But it was probably sold after having spent an indeterminate amount of time in a wooden vessel, ehh?

As far as I know it was brewed for immediate sale. That way of course the brewer could get his money without a long wait.

It depends. I have only had a few BA IPAs. One being Boubon Barrel Aged Coffemaker - Kent Falls Brewing Company. Which is a brett IPA brewed in collaboration with Irving Farm Coffee Roaster.

Completely different than any beer i have ever had before and the barrel just made this beer a hoemrun IMO

If a Brewery is going to barrel age a IPA, I wish would try to barrel age a beer that does well aging, like Dogfish head 120. Unless they already tried that and I just have not discovered it yet.
