Do you limit your intake?

So the wife and I have decided to start trying for a kid so I wanted to clean out my body so to say. Both of us are in good shape, try to eat mostly organic, and work out regularly; however I do love my beer (she's not a drinker). I've always tried to not drink during the week, but when the weekends come I like to enjoy myself. I'm not getting hammered every weekend but I also haven’t been monitoring my intake. To further cleanse myself, I've put myself on a 3 beer limit per weekend night (which includes converting the high ABV beers). Just in case you’re interested, here is the conversion:

Change the alcohol % into a decimal by moving the decimal 2 places to the left (ex. 7% = .07). Multiply that by the number of ounces (ex. 22oz bomber). Hit equals and then times that by .6 (conversion for the alcohol amount in one drink…..or 5% ABV per 12 oz).

An example for conversion would be; Hoppin Frog Barrel Aged B.O.R.I.S (recently got in a trade)

    .094 x 22 = 2.068 / .6 = 3.44666

So drinking this 22oz beer would be like drinking three and a half alcoholic drinks.

This goes above my limit so this beer must wait (I'll only break my limit by a little if it's a beer that needs to be drunk fresh).

As I’ve been doing this for a couple months now, it is getting harder and harder. I think it's only because like anything, you want what you can't have. I've received great beers in recent trades too, but since most of them go over my allowance, they just sit there and taunt me. I’ve switched it up to not drive myself crazy too (either one high ABV beer a night, or one higher ABV beer and one session beer a night, or three session beers a night).

    So my questions are:

1.Have you ever limited your intake for a reason?

2.If so, what did you do and how did you handle it?

I'm not particularly clear on what you're attempting to accomplish with this, but I think it's safe to say that everyone here limits their intake, at least somewhat.

    Are you an engineer?

To answer your question, most nights I drink about as much as I feel like drinking; no more, no less. On occasion I open a beer that sneaks up on me, but I'm usually pretty careful not to overdo it. I'm a parent and it's just not cool or responsible to get trashed when you might have to deal with some unforeseen emergency in the middle of the night. Plus, I don't especially enjoy being more than a little buzzed.

I spent 4 months drinking stout and eating like crap. Needless to say I gained some weight (15lbs about). Down to 1 beer per week (22oz) with no ABV restriction, but I'm staying away from my stouts because they can sit fine in the cellar. Once I get back to my normal weight (10ish lbs to go), I will go back to what I used to do and eat healthy and no drinking on weekdays and do whatever I want when the weekend comes.

It's pedantic to note this, but I'd be troubled if I saw an engineer writing
    .094 x 22 = 2.068 / .6 = 3.44666
    because equality commutes.

The man who invents non alcoholic craft beer that can still maintain the full flavor without the alcohol will become a millionaire.

Too much thinking, not enough drinking.

I suggest throwing that goofy formula out the window, stop over thinking this one and enjoy in moderation.

The man who invents that will not recieve any support from me.

Maybe you should ask yourself if you're accomplishing your goal (not sure what that is), and then go from there. If all this restricting is/isn't doing it, then keep doing it or think of something else. Take a step back and try to evaluate it both subjective and objectively, not with formulas and mathematics.

But you said it yourself: you want what you can't have. I would suggest to stop putting limits on your intake. You'll probably find that it goes down, or at least that it's more normal/balanced and not so calculated. You may also want to talk it over with your wife, as there may be some unspoken pressure from her to cut back given she's not a drinker.

    Good luck!

1 beer per night on weeknights when I would love to have 2. No real limit on weekends, other than how I determine where I am along the diminishing rate of return curve. IE, for each beer consumed I receive slightly less enjoyment out of the subsequent beer. Normally I don't feel inclined to have any more after three beers. Sometimes four. I have a 5 month old son at home and concur with draheim above. I've actually lost a couple pounds lately, so maybe I need to increase my consumption.

I know a guy who was trying to start a family but seemed to be having a hard time. This guy also drank a LOT of beer (non-craft). His wife kept pestering him about his drinking, urging him to cut back for whatever perceived fertility benefit. Months went by and still no plus sign on the sticks. She was continually nagging him about his drinking and was miserable and stressed about not getting pregnant. Predictably, he was stressed out and miserable. When hanging out with them, you could feel the tension. And so one day another friend wisely pointed out, "If she'd just let him relax and get drunk, I guarantee she'll get knocked up."

Take away from this anecdotal story whatever you wish.

I limit my intake by thinking about a beer that I'd like to drink all week. I make sure that beer is in the fridge an hour or two before consumption. Then I clean my house, promoting the atmosphere in which my beer is consumed (this may vary from person to person). Take out a piece of paper and a pen and lay it on a hard flat surface, preferably right in front of the chair/sofa/bed/floor that you'll be sitting on while you drink.

Clean the glass in which you're going to drink the beer thoroughly, even if it's already clean. Hand dry it.

When conditions appear suitable, pour your beer into your glass. Take time throughout the beer to take notes and consider its many facets. Inhale deeply before each sip, take a quaff somewhere in the middle, but make sure it lasts at least thirty to forty minutes.

Once your beer is finished, transcribe your notes into a BA review. Double check for spelling errors and publish it. Then read a selection of past reviews for the same brew and compare.

    Repeat process. Intake limited.

I don't have a limit but usually don't have more than 3 at a sitting. I get my buzz on and then stop. I don't want or need to get hammered. Did that 35-40 years ago. Yeah I'm old and hopfully a little smarter although I did kill many brain cells "back in the day". If I go out I have 2-3 beers, then cut off for hours. Don't want to drive with a buzz on. Enjoy you brew but be careful.

If you have 3.5 drinks on Saturday, just limit yourself to 2.5 on Sunday. Having 4 drinks a night for life is bad for you. Having 4 drinks in a night a few times per month is no big deal, especially if you abstain on other days.
