If you think about drinking that much, you should stop.

Armchair science/medicine is the best kind.

I have personal experience in this arena, far exceeding a few months of "no plus sign on the sticks." Yes, stress is one of many, many factors involved. Let's just say I don't think listening to the song "Let's Get Drunk and Screw" is necessarily the most useful fertility advice.

I've limited mine, simply because I don't want to drink too much and I enjoy beer. IMO it shouldn't be excessive.

Lately, especially since I've been getting tons of great beer through trades, I've been limiting my intake. Up until about six months ago, I'd have one or two beers every other night or so, but lately I want to drink at least one every night. Couple of problems with that: my job requires a lot of focused, long-term concentration, and the older I get, the more I feel the mental hangover effects the next day. Also, speaking of getting older, the more I drink, the more the--ahem--"bedroom" effects become apparent. What's weird is that when I *do* overindulge (4+ craft beers in a night), the next day I feel mentally shitty but extremely on-point the other way.

I've just been trying to find the right balance. Right now I'm on an out-of-town work assignment, so I'm able to play around with various intakes. Everybody's body is different, and I think you just have to experiment to find what works.

FWIW, I have a buddy who's wife is a naturopath (and midwife) and she believes the alcohol/fertility connection is overestimated.

So, are you asking if drinking beer will affect you sperm count?

Just to clarify the only thing that has changed before this limit was even imposed on me by myself was that I didn't really monitor my intake. My wife never drank before this and I don't go out and get hammered (I sometimes put on a good buzz though). I usually only drink on the weekends anyway. I was just monitoring myself just to make sure I'm doing the most I can (without going to the extreme) to have a healthy baby.

Also, not an Engineer but my wife is a math teacher so that's where the formula came from.

    Training for a marathon here,
also just thought about wanting to limit cost and live long life.
    I have either 1-2 (12-16oz) beers
    or 1 (750ml a day).

What makes you sure about this? These two things could be entirely unrelated.

Yes, I limit my intake, but not actively. I generally shoot for 2-3 beers a night, and 5-6 nights a week. I normally don't exceed 3, and I often only have 1 (or none).

My only specific methodology is I maintain a tracker (on a calendar), where I list what I drank that day, and how much (e.g. beer, wine, liquor). If I have a higher ABV drink, I adjust the "number" of drinks accordingly. So, a 12oz anywhere from 5% to 7.6% or so counts as 1, but a 9.6% or 12% or whatever I will simply log as 2 drinks. Take on a 22oz DIPA or Quad? Anywhere from 3 to 4 drinks, depending on the ABV. Nothing quite so engineered as above.

This allows me to look back, and think, "Hmm, I've gone eight straight days with at least one beer. That wasn't my plan. I should probably have zero beers today, at a minimum," or, "Wow, back to back four-bangers? I need to take it easy. Or at least lay off the tripels and quads." (It's really easy to have a couple 12oz tripels over the course of the day, and, surprise, you're at four drinks.)

It's just a way to keep myself honest. I keep my weight very low, eat healthy, and stay active, plus I occasionally have to go multiple months straight without a drop (underway). So, my only concerns are overall health effects and alcoholism. Tracking my intake is a good way to make sure I'm not ramping up my drinking, or slipping into a dangerous routine, and if I notice a trend I don't particularly like, I can change it.

Once you start lying to yourself, or find you struggle to limit your intake, it's time to consider whether your habit or past-time has become something more.

The drunker I am the harder my swimmers swim.

But no I don't artificially limit my intake. If I want a beer I'll drink it, simple as that. My body lets me know whether I want it or not. Plenty of good beer in the house the other night but I didn't have any; just didn't want it.

And I think the whole limiting yourself to 3, doing math, and not drinking a bomber that comes out to 3.5 is pure loony toons.

    To answer your questions:

Yes, I have had to limited my intake, at times, due to medical reasons.

I have handled it by knowing that it was a temporary situation and that I would enjoy it more (and have enjoyed it more) once the problem was resolved.

You stated that "I've received great beers in recent trades too, but since most of them go over my allowance, they just sit there and taunt me". So, think of it like this, you have something to celebrate with when the time comes.

Sperm are pretty resilient (i.e. smoking, drinking, drugs do not effect their quality), drinking has no effect whatsoever on your contribution to a healthy baby.

I do beleive that excessive alcohol intake lowers sperm count; but your former and current drinking habits are nowhere near excessive.

The whole formula, monitoring system, and stress associated with it seems a little extreme. I'd say just relax about it, like others have said, stress and expectations can be much more problematic in having a baby than a few beers.
