Can I ask why? It just seems odd to have a problem with your opinion because of other's. I often feel many people will rate beers closer to the community average rather than rating appropriately for what they actually thought. This results in many reviews where the written review doesn't match the number.

"The beer has it's flaws and left me very unimpressed. I would not purchase this beer again."
    "3.74"

    Huh?

Not really sure. If there's a beer that has stellar reviews and I only find it okay, I sort of question my palate, wondering if I'm not tasting it right. or maybe I have issues with being let down.

Yes. I rate beer even if it is horrible. It helps me to distinguish the different profiles, and describe why I don't care for that particular beer.

Whats the point in rating a beer if you aren't if you aren't perpetuating the hype? I don't even drink anything thats not in the top 100, because I know I'll like those cus the internets said so. :sunglasses:

Absolutely rate everything. Subjective reviews are the basis for a fair overall picture. There will be lovers and haters for every beer and I hope they average out, since I use BA as a tool when making purchase decisions. I rate when I have time, regardless. I try to be objective and rate fairly. I am not an IPA fan, but I rate IPA's based on how a beer tastes to me within the parameters of the style.

Despite trying to be objective, I have had one review removed. Todd felt it was a rant. I rated Budweiser select 55 and stated it wasn't even a beer at 2.40%. My reasoning was most people, including a buddy of mine, think they are buying a typical 4-5% abv beer to get drunk or buzzed while dieting. They won't ever look on BA and see the 2.40%abv, so I think they are getting ripped off and not buying a real beer, as marketed. My review was removed for being a rant, not analysis, which is fair enough, as they've never touched another review of mine and they provided a reasonable explanation. So, if nothing else, the Bros will regulate your reviews if they feel they are too out of whack. Review away, it contributes to the big picture.

When I joined this site, it was because I wanted a way to keep track of what beers I've tried and what I thought of them. I think of my reviews as being primarily for myself, and I don't consider myself to be an expert on beer. I've always assumed that my one review of a beer isn't going to determine whether or not someone decides to give it a go, just as I wouldn't base whether or not to try a beer on the opinion of one stranger on the internet. When I try a beer where it might be that the style isn't to my liking rather than that one particular example of it, I try to be fair and to keep in mind what the characteristics of that style are supposed to be, rather than just my own preferences. (And if I know I really don't like a particular style of beer, I'm not going to keep trying beers of that style. There are too many beers in the world for that!) I do like to rate or review everything I try, just for my own records.

Every beer gets a number. I drink way too much beer to remember one from the next over time. My number ratings are all I have to go back to for finding things to purchase or trade for again or not.

I don't rate beers that I may not like, but are still true to their style. Not the beers fault could well be a world class beer in it's style lost on me, why punish the beer. If it's a style I like and well practiced on then yes I would rate it accordingly. Really simple if you don't like Funk, which I don't why would I rate a farmhouse style Ale and then destroy it in a rating? Try it and move on no rating required I know going in funk and sours are not my thing.

A great beer fresh, at least it was a few years ago prior to it becoming a rarity in SW Missouri; but tails off after about 6 weeks after bottled on date considerably.

I rate beers for my own record. If I drank a beer that I didn't like, I want to remember that. If I had one that I liked from a place I seldom get to visit I'd want a record of that so I could remind myself to enjoy it the next time I was there. So I don't evaluate my rating based on what others have said, it's just mine.

I think it would be foolish to buy a beer I knew I didn't like just to give it a bad rating when for the same money I could have had something that I enjoyed.

Every beer I purchase, I'll hope I like, I just have higher hopes for some than others. Unless I find some horrible freshness date after the fact ( happens more than it should ); I rate'em all. Tickers gotta tick...

I haven't had a beer I didn't like since about 1979 when I had the misfortune to buy a case of Iron City. While I'm a big fan of craft beers in general, I like some more than others but haven't posted any rating yet as I'm still feeling my way around here. But when I'm considering a beer I haven't had before I come here to see what my fellow beer drinkers think about it. I not only look at the overall ratings but what the reviewer liked or didn't like about it. So I think it's essential to report on beers you don't like if the ratings are going to have any meaning. Elaborating on what you didn't like, for example, "I generally don't care for this style of beer but a friend encouraged me to try it" because then I know where the reviewer is coming from.

I rate beers in the styles I like. If it's a crap example of the style, then it gets hammered in the review.

I can't tell you how many witbiers have made me want to hurl. I don't like that style, so I don't rate them. If you generally like rye beers but didn't like this one, then rate away and dish it a 2.1. If you're generally not a fan of rye beers to begin with, then you were probably right in not rating it.

I always rate everything. Really good beers I try to actually review. Beers don't deserve great ratings if people aren't honestly rating them.
