Do you see lagers on cask?

Let me start this thread by saying I very much appreciate that bars are doing cask beers these days. Ale or lager, they are excellent and I hope to see more. With that said, I have never seen a lager on cask at a bar I've been to. Is this simply because beer geeks favor ales too heavily and the owners don't want to put a beer that's not going to sell in the cask? I would imagine that's the case. I know lagers in casks exist (as I believe there was some fest in Mass. not that long ago that had many such brews). How about in your area? Do you see them? Are they as awesome as I imagine them to be?

Yes, there are a few. Oldershaw Regal Blond (a play on lager!) goes down well at festivals where I usually see some casks purporting to contain lagers.Schiehallion was well known and our local brewer did one for a while.

I would think that since lagers are best served cold the style doesn't lend itself to being packaged as a celler temp cask. I would try it though, might be good!

That is a rare one, IMO, and cask is rare enough. But yes, I have had a few due to my rule - if the brewery has a cask I order it first no matter the style. And I am never disappointed exactly, even by lagers. 4Peaks had one many years ago, might have had two, but they are an ale house. I think I had one at Cambridge brewery quite a while ago too. Rock Bottom in a couple of locations has had one I've tried, and don't some Gordon Biersch locations do a cask from time to time? In any case from what I remember, all it had was a soft mouth feel and an uneasy aftertaste that made me think it was served at the wrong temperature or left out on the table too long. I just don't think the "lagering" process lends itself to cask experiments I have had. Those in the UK feel free to say something, I know you have a lot more access to real ale - and lagers are popular there - so whats the cask lager real story?

In much of Franconia, cask lagers are the rule rather than the exception. And, yes: IMO they are some of the best beers on the planet.

    “German Gravity Kegs Are Back

We know you love them, and we do too. Every Friday from now through Halloween we will tap a different German gravity firkin. Whatever you don’t drink we will. Please help save our livers.”

    Above is from:http://teresas-cafe.com/TNDEvents.htm

I recently had a Kellerbier from Weissenohe on cask. Below is something I posted in a thread:

“I was at a local beer bar this past weekend and to my delight there was a firkin on the bar: it was a cask of Weissenohe Kellerbier. I ordered one and it was a very tasty brew. It had a nice golden amber color and the nose and flavor was dominated by doughy malt. The hops were very much in the background on this beer. A very pleasant beer to drink!”

    Cheers!

Someday we hope to take a trip to Poland where my wife's family roots are, and I think a quick train ride over to some German destinations will round such a trip out nicely.

I saw a lager from Haverhill Brewing on cask a little while back. It was awful but that's neither here nor there.

Slightly OT - but I always thought this Cask Cabinet would be a great addition to any home:

That's exactly what I said the first time I saw one.

It's a nice beer, too- not too carbonated, goes down really smooth. The flavor is pretty much like what JackHorzempa described above (doughy malt, restrained hops); there's even some yeast/sediment in there that the instructions direct you to redistribute before tapping. A friend and I knocked one off during a card game one night, and didn't get tired of it at all.

This. There was an event at Novare last weekend that featured quite a list of beers. A list from a couple years ago can be found here. The list this year was even bigger.

I'm beginning to see more ales on casks around my area (LA), but I don't recall seeing a lager on cask yet.

I'd kill for a cask of Anchor Steam. Moonlight Reality Chzechk on cask was sublime, don't see many cask lagers in the bay.
