Plus, it's a silly portmanteau. It's even worse than Snulip.

What do you call it, a winku (wine glass - Teku hybrid)? I think snuku is much more accurate in this instance.

I have one that came in a gift box a few years ago, put it on the top shelf, it'll be there till I day, too delicate. I'm fine with my Lagunitas mason jar and a few "pint" glasses from the local brewers.

The amount of weight in a 12-16oz beer makes holding a teku so awkwardly top heavy when holding it by the stem. I feel like beers were never meant to be in a glass like that because of the serving size. The reason it works for wine is that the average pour is around 5 oz making it much easier to manage.

It is a glass specifically indicated for tasting.
This means that the priority is to put the beers in the best possible condition to bring out their organoleptic characteristics.
I think that is the priority aspect.
Precisely for this reason, at least down here, it is by far the most used by judges in brewing competitions, where you have to taste countless beers of countless styles and then write an evaluation sheet.
Obviously, at home we can choose the glass that we think is best suited to the beer we are about to drink.
When I drink at home, personally, TeKu is the first option that comes to mind only when I have to drink an IGA.
But, if it could be as it usually isn't, I would take it to every festival I would go to.

I have just one teku, from the Alchemist. I've only used it a couple of times but happened to use it last weekend and was struck by how heavy it is - doesn't feel fragile at all. I'm sure it wouldn't survive a drop onto granite counter or tile floor, but I'm betting it would survive a drop onto hardwood floor. (not that I'm going to intentionally test that)

I have 3 or 4 of them and think they look sexy. But they are also fragile. As most of my drinking is outside they don't get used very much. The quartz counter tops and sink are not glass friendly either.

I don't really get all this "tekus are fragile" talk....

Aren't all glasses somewhat fragile if you drop them onto a hard surface?

No. The only dedicated beer glass I own anymore is a half liter Hofbrau mug I found at the local transfer station swap shop. Tekus seem too fragile and impractical.

I purchased my first Teku from Surly Brewing so I could drink Darkness from it. Prior to owning this glassware, Darkness tasted great, but now it is a work of art.

That's been my experience, except maybe for that shot glass I dropped in the garbage disposal one time. I couldn't get a grip on it to fish it out, and I finally had to break it with a steel knife sharpener and a hammer and pull the bigger pieces out with a pair of tongs. I ground up the rest. Probably still in the trap for all I know.

I have a rambunctious 7-year-old Australian Shepherd that still acts like a pup. There have been numerous pieces of glassware broken around here since I've had him. His fault: 0. My fault: all the rest.

I think you have the wrong idea. The impression you are getting is essentially that “glass is fragile,” but tekus, like some wine glasses, are a special type of fragile. For example, my wife really likes a particular style of balloon wine glass. The bowl would hold like 20oz if you really wanted, but the glass is so thin you can crush it with you hand while washing. The stem is also like 12 inches, and very thing. Basically, you have to be careful to not knock it over, you have to be careful when you wash it, and hell, you’re really best served by hand-drying it so that it doesn’t get broke while drying, unless nothing else will be going into your drying rack for awhile. Also, while there is liquid in it, it is more top heavy and prone to being knocked over. Basically, it constantly has to be babied.

Basically, this is the same for a Teku, especially if people fill them up. No “normal” beer glass competes with this in terms of fragility.

Not every Teku is super “thin” and fragile. Some are designed smaller and much more stout (or thicker glass). But, in general, that is the exception not the rule in my opinion.

I use a Teku for every single one of my "official" tastings. I settled on it for a variety of reasons: It's visually appealing, it's versatile for a variety of styles and most importantly, it eliminates the variable of differing glassware between beers.

    HOWEVER...

As a normal use glass, I hate it. It's a pain to clean and for a casual/first impression tasting, it's pretentious as hell in my very personal opinion.

My favorite glass to use? A Willie Belcher. My two or so nonic pints will do too, but it depends on whichever is clean.

I have one. A "gift" from one of my kids who was tired of moving it from apartment to apartment. I don't think I have ever used it. Definitely partial to my Spiegelau collection.

Lol - it has happened and I immediately went into therapy! Seriously the SP glasses tend to be pretty sturdy - thick glass with mostly round edges do a pretty good job preventing breaks. Cheers!
