There has to be a general skew up. a 3.6 is an 80 which is often not a great beer in my experience. Anything below that is typically putrid.... To many people handing out 5s

My average rating is somewhat higher than the rest of the BA crowd as a whole - I see it as a combination of 2 things: my base is higher than some (my baseline mainstream BMC item is a little higher than the norm, so that skews the good stuff a bit higher) and I seek out craft breweries or particular offerings that ought to be fairly good while avoiding a lot of mediocre stuff (I am not generally tickering beers indiscriminately just to have had them)

My scores are mostly a little higher, but I'm not as picky as a lot of people on here

What you are talking about certainly occurs, but I want to point out that the opposite also occurs. Sometimes people get too worried about being influenced by the consensus of others, leading them to underrate a beer (either consciously or subconsciously).

That's only above average if the beers you review average less than that. I suspect that the OP was asking whether your rDev scores are above or below average. It looks like you have roughly 850 positive and 850 negative rDev scores. I did not attempt to determine if your average rDev is positive or negative.

My ratings are generally higher because I tend to drink the styles I like. That said, my below average reviews tend to be well below-average. It seems that when I don't like a beer . . . I really don't like it.

Higher, although when I don't like something I'm not afraid to rip it. And of course I gravitate toward things I think I will enjoy. Guess I'm pretty much just a fanboy when all is said and done though.

I'm usually pretty close to consensus, probably a few more to the negative, and my negatives can run higher to the negative to my positive.

Sometimes I find it hard to rate a beer i have one time too low because:
    • Every aspect of the beer being poor is rare.
    • Maybe I had a bad sample (at size of 1)

I fairly rarely give above 4.5 or below 3 in a category, and question that from time to time. However, I also think the fact that there is so much good beer out there helps (not that there aren't some that need not be out there, but this site helps me avoid them )

I'm in the 3.5~4.0 range for most of mine, but there are the few exceptions that are truly not good to me. I do tend to be right about the established score for beers (rDev) though again, some outliers are there due to personal taste.

Definitely higher, I rate a beer for what it is, not against other beers I've had in the same style, I tend to give them all a fair shake. Most if not all craft beer is pretty tasty, I mean it's light years tastier than Coors, Bud, Miller, Lowenbrau, Labbatts, Molson, Stella......., at least to me. In the last 5 years alone over 2000 new breweries have come about in the USA. Some of the great brew's in the past have some pretty great competion now a days.

    Cheers!

Lower. Except for lagers, in which case I'm often higher.

I've read your reviews, if I see anything 4+ it's usually a Mind-Bendingly good brew. Real Talk.

Mine are higher for brews I feel are worth more than their Avg-rDev Score. Lesser for brews I feel are not worth their Avg-rDev Score. Wait...yeah.

Mostly a bit higher for most beers. And those that get a lower score are fairly lower than average.

Maybe even over all but lately much lower. Not every beer can be in the 90's.

Well, some of us skew high and some of us skew low... that's how an average is formed!

It completely varies, as I feel it should. We all have different palates after all, right? I have noticed, however, as I become more accustomed to different styles, etc., that my scores tend to stay closer to the median than they did before.
