Does anybody else prefer an imperial stout when it's colder?

It seems like I always prefer a big stout when it's a bit colder because I feel like it drinks less like a liquer or something -- they tend to get a bit syrupy sweet and overly warming/boozy. I still enjoy the sweetness and warmth and booziness which is always there even when they come out of the fridge, but not when the beer's approaching room temperature.

I feel like I'm one of very few who picks out more desirable flavors from a big stout when it's fresh out of the fridge -- so much so that I tend to regrettably drink too fast.

Sounds crazy to me. But then again I like my DIPAs really cold for the exact same reason.

I drink them slowly to begin with, but I start out cold and by the time I am finishing the last slurp, could be at room temperature. So I get the gamut. Which do I prefer - kinda hard to say. I think the cold start helps "ease into" a big brew, but I have also had my enjoyment vary as well. Some I liked better cold, some I liked more as they opened up.

I like any beer it seems at about 40 Fahrenheit. I was at a bar a few weeks ago that had Dale's Pale Ale on-tap, and they served it into frozen glasses... it was basically unenjoyable until the glass thawed out.

I always find that when it warms up I get a lot more of the flavors, there’s been a lot of beers that I hated when it was cold and completely changed my mind once it warmed.

my stouts and barely wines are stored at 55F. If I want one, I stick it in the fridge for 30mins to an hour. I have often served such beers too cold, but it isn't the end of the world because it will warm. I too enjoy the flavors coming out as it warms and agree that at a certain point they get too sticky sweet for my liking. I think I enjoy most stouts and barelywines right around 50F.

For some reason, I find this to be true for TenFidy. Most others I like when warmer.

I personally like to pour them chilled, try it right away. Then I like to let it warm up and see how the flavors change.

I hate when I get a imp stout/bw at cold temps from a bar. I have to wait a good 15+ minutes or so for it warm up to optimal temp so I can taste everything in it...

    I'm exactly the same
I tend to put them in the freezer and take out when really cold then take my time
Recently spent an hour sipping on a founders imperial and it was great when I started and wonderful at the end too

I frequently like my beers a bit chillier than I know I'm supposed to drink them at. I don't care. My beer... my palate, I'm happy, and that's all that matters! :stuck_out_tongue:

I was going to post this exact thing. TedFidy has this amazing mouth feel - but I like it best a little colder.

I like to start them at fridge temp and drink them slowly so they warm to room temp eventually.

    I pour mine at about 58º F.
If at a bar, I order ahead of time before whatever I'm drinking is finished.

You and I are in the same boat Fargrow. I also drink my Impy Stouts at room temp and my IIPAs right out of the fridge. For me, when they're cold and the sweetness gets knocked down a peg, it intensifies the hops.

Same here. I enjoy the stages of the warm-up process as the beer gradually opens up.

Yes, I do. You're not crazy.

I like to get all of my beer, regardless of style, as cold as possible to start with. I'm American, grew up in America, so about 100% of everything I drank from age 4 to 40 was ice cold. I'm conditioned to drink things cold.

With that said, I definitely will let certain beers sit and warm up ... with imperial stouts, I'll sip them slowly to the point that at the end of a 12 oz. beer, it will be well into the 50- to 55-degree range. In fact, I want to get a thermometer to take readings on this stuff, just out of curiosity.

Big stouts definitely get syrupy as they warm ... they do for me. And I'm not a fan of that. They also can open up quite a bit in terms of aroma and taste, which makes for a good trade off.

I will let them sit for a few minutes before opening. I like them served at about 45 degrees then I drink them slow and let'em warm up.
