I was surprised at some of the responses. Among my beer nerd friends there seem to be two groups, those who love sours and are always looking for a new one to try and those who really dislike sours. I was surprised to read that some people are lukewarm since that contradicts the reactions I have seen.

Personally, great sours and really great barrel-aged stouts are my favorite styles and I am always looking for excellent examples of each that I have not tried.

I love sour styles. Which is why Max's 72 hours of Beligium and Sour Monday is one of the best beerfests. I wouldn't be able to do it every weekend but once a year it is awesome.

A new one I had was NBB Love's Leopold - I thought it was really good

Being fairly new to sours (started enjoying them a few months ago) I could drink them all day if given the chance.

I dig sours, and drink them often, but to answer the OP's questions (in order); no, no and no.

Sours are great. I like berliner weisse, wild ales, sour saisons, gueuze, lambics (sour ones not sweet). But yea very expensive style. Evil twin makes a pretty sour berliner called nomader weisse. 18$ for a 6 pack. But crooked stave sours range from 8.99 up to 14.99 where im from in CT. Its an awesome style and its becoming more popular than ever. It was the last style i got into though because of price point and didnt like them all that much when i had tried a few. Bocker Cuvee des jacobins made me fall in love with sour style beers and from there i cant get enough

Didn't like sour beers for a while, but once the bug bit me, it hasn't let go. Having great sours/wild beers, especially on tap, at places like Cascade and Wicked Weed can convert a lot of people. I've homebrewed for 20 years but just recently started brewing sours and wild beers...it's revitalized my desire for brewing all beer styles and is quite rewarding to drink and share with other puckerheads!

    Let me count the ways:

    1. I love that other people obsess and chase sours so I can buy other beers.
    2. I love that I don't buy them as they are expensive, not that I would particularly care if I really loved them.
    3. I love that I can taste 2 ounces or so of the best sours made in the US from my nice friends who share, but they don't mind having more of a share of the bottle than I do.

Yes. I tend to like the more subtle ones though as opposed to the real mouth pucking ones.

A recent trip to Wicked Weed taught me that they are not all that bad - if brewed correctly.

Man! My first "sour ale" was Surly's Pentagram at a beer expo - instantly hooked!! However at the time, the beer bars I went to hadn't started actively pursuing them, so I didn't really get exposure to the styles. (I think you should have at least one if you sport 25+ taps). Now they're everywhere.

But, IF you are looking to try some easier, "beginner-sours" that are still very very good: Moylan's Lonely Tarts Club, Silly Sour, Monk's Café, Jolly Pumpkin La Roja, Delirium Red, St. Louis Kriek and Gueuze, New Glarus fruit beers.....on and on. None of these are super expensive, La Roja is about $20 a bottle but you should at least try it! And they all age very well!

Sours have their place and have their diehard fanboys (the people who happily drop 40 bucks on a large bottle of the stuff), but I mostly have a very weak respect for the style. So long as they are free at a beer tasting, I'm down to try them, but that's about it.

In the past few years I have dived into sour beers more. Luckily I have been exposed to some fantastic small batches locally made in Delmar,DE about an hour south of Dover. I brew sours and like the uniqueness and tradition.

In reality when you drink a non candied up sour, you are drinking history. Sours are basically your simple, natural yeast, high temp ferment brew.

I don't crave sours, but like a change of pace and to pull out something new with friends.
