I was just wondering if people drink these so called "white whales", beers like Cable Car or BVDL? It just seems to me that people keep on wanting them without the intent to drink them. For example if you went to a bar that had a bottle of a whale, lets say BA Abraxas, but you had to drink it there and the price was fitting of such a beer. Would you buy it and drink/share it at the bar, or would you pass and get upset that you couldn't take it home to brag or try and flip it?

I'd drink it...I'll drink a whale...I'd hold it for some type of occasion, but ever once in a while, it is nice to open up a whale on a Tuesday and share it with yourself...

I've never acquired a whale so the answer is no. I've drank plenty of great beer however.

I save them for special occasions or bottle shares.

Yes. I refuse to trade anything I only have one of if I have never tasted it. So in that regard if it is a one per person release it is going in my face and no one elses.

Nope. I just add them to my beer shrine and worship them. Who would drink a beer anyway?

    mmmmm.....blubbery goodness.
Never had the luxury, but if i had access to something whale-y I'd drink it when the time was right.

I sure do. After about a year of trading and never drinking anything I only had one of, I said screw it and started opening a bottle every now and then. Usually, it's when I have someone to share it with over. A couple weeks ago, I drank my only Smokey and the Bois (admittedly, not necessarily a whale)...it was great.

Everyone's definition of a whale seems to be different. For beers that take considerable effort to acquire, I usually wait and share them with a couple of buddies who I know wouldn't get to try it otherwise. The only thing I've ever specifically saved just for myself (and my wife) was Prop 13'. Will likely do the same with Prop 14'.

Special occasions, or any time that can easily be justified as being special. Drink up!

I should also note that I have a vertical of Dark Lord that no one is touching. I also now recall drinking my '07 Decadence on my birthday earlier this year. That certainly qualifies.

The answer is yes, people drink them. Prime example, check untapped checkins for some of these beers and you will see people drink them.

You're asking if I would pass on a whale at a bar because I had to drink it there? :astonished::confused:

Chasing whales is a fools errand.

I don't care how amazing someone says something is, if I have to go to the edges of the Earth or drain my bank account to get it, I will pass. There are simply too many great beers out there to focus that much attention on a specific one.

If I can get it fairly easily though, then yeah I will pick it up. If I had a 'whale' available in front of me, I would absolutely drink it as soon as possible. It's just beer, I don't see it as a treasure to covet. Beer is meant to be drank and experienced, otherwise what is the point?

Whales are for drinking unless you have more than one.
