    Here's what I mean:

I have an Assassin bottle and I was offered two bottles of Vanilla Rye for it.

There's an open trade offering BT for Vanilla Rye.

Therefore, if Assassin = 2 VR then Assassin = two Black Tuesday.

Taking it a step further, there's a offer of Black Tuesday for O&P + C5.

If 1 Black Tuesday = OP + C5 and 1 Assassin = 2 Black Tuesday then using the transitive property we see that 1 Assassin = 4 JK Sours (OP + C5).

So, is this an acceptable way to deduce a fair trade value for beers that won't trade 1:1? Or is this just the product of me having too much free time at work this week?

Keep in mind that some of these are simply offers that haven't necessarily closed. I would trade BT for Vanilla Rye 1:1 all day long if I could, doesn't mean it's gonna happen...

Fair enough. I figured as much. Just something that popped into my head as I've been refreshing the ISO:FT board and scrolling through today.

Agreed...Nobody is going to do O&P and C5 for Black Tuesday and nobody is likely going to trade a Vanilla Rye for a Black Tuesday. An offer doesn't equal a done deal, just really wishful thinking in most cases. You have to look more at closed trades, but even then you've got outliers. You can probably get 3 or 4 JK sours for Assassin but those other trades don't really have anything to do with it...it's more about people really wanting Assassin.

So wait if I post an offer- FT: 2 PBR ISO: 4 Vanilla rye, does that bring down the value of Vanilla Rye?

Why go for the 4 VR when you can use trade algebra (trademark pending) to get 2 Assassin

Whoever offered you C5 and OP for BT was being insanely generous.

It was the BT side asking for C5 and O&P...still open as far as I can see on the boards.

Ah I see, that fuzzy math. So this entire thread is irrelevant and redundant.

Even when comparing completed trades, everybody has their own opinion as to what beers are worth relative to others. And wouldn't you know it, the value usually skews in favor of the beers that person owns!

There are so many variables when you are not trading with an established partner that I feel makes it impossible to figure out the value of a beer. It really comes down to what each side really wants, so I don't see a point in trying to quantifying it. You can check previous trades for a baseline. Best you can do is throw an offer out there and see what happens.

For me, there would be no way I would trade away my favorite beer, Lift Bridge BA Silhouette. You would have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

I've tried using the transitive property in the past (If BVDL = 2 DBH, and 2 DBH = 2 BA Abraxas and 1 BA Abraxas = 4 JK sours = etc etc etc etc etc) but it doesn't work like that. Typically people look at you funny.

It's kind of like predicting a sports win or loss based on the two teams records against common opponents...might offer some guidance but past results are not a predictor of future outcomes

The outliers point is so important. When very few trades are done for certain beers the assumption that one completed trade establishes a fair market is silly. And, of course people always pick the outliers that are in their favor.

I agree with your point, however, everyone has their own opinion of the value or scarcity of everything. Donald Trump thinks a $10 bill isn't worth bending down to pick up; whereas the guy standing at the highway exit ramp will probably wash my entire car with his squeegee for it.

Value is subjective, and I think that was your point. The only true "value" of something is in what it will bring in an arm's length transaction.

    Just my opinion.

Next you're going to suggest that we might be able to deduce numerical values of beers. Perhaps on a scale of GWU (George Washington Units), let us say. That's obviously crazy talk.
