Odell Mountain Standard is one of my favorite beers. Haven't tried Stone SSR, but have 2 Wookey Jacks that I'll drink soon. I'm a big fan of the style if done well.

NoDa Brewing in Charlotte has a great one that isn't a double - Midnight Madness. Comes back in January. My favorite single black IPA (it's around 6-7%).

I usually like them. Mountain Standard is definitely my favorite. Lake Superior Deep Water is also pretty decent.

Black Racer from Bear Republic is good. Only one I like.

I enjoy SSR and Wookey Jack but for some reason I can barely stomach Mountain Standard. I love Odell's other IPAs but I can't do MS. I just recently tried Mikkeller Beer Hop Breakfast, a Black IPA with coffee, and it was one of the most interesting and delicious beers I tried all year.

Every Black IPA has been a disappointment to me, not that I really dislike any of them in general, but that they don't have the punch of either a decent IPA or or the smoothness worthy of a good porter. The Wookey Jack with the rye added is pretty darn good, but does that make it not a "black IPA"? Lately I have begun to wonder if a brewery makes a "black IPA" because the IPA batch was screwed up somehow and they are trying to "hide" the evidence?

Nah, I choose to believe it is just a marketing fad that has just about run its course.

Mountain Standard is the only really great one I have had.

They are not my favourite and there are honestly too many brewed nowadays, they are virtually as ubiquitous as pale IPAs

Uintas Dubhe is so good! Give that one a try before you give up on the style.

I've never liked the style in and of itself. To me, the concept screams redundancy, and I wish the brewers would just try to make their extant IPAs and stouts better, rather than feeding the [diff.color]IPA fads. All that said, Yakima Glory (to me, really a hoppy dark amber) is quite good. For a light mouthfeel in a dark beer, I enjoy BlackForest from Saranac, one of their non-derivative offerings.

Didn't sound like a good idea when I first heard of it and tasted like it wasn't a good idea once I tried it. As someone pointed out earlier it's the combination of little malt body to support bitterness from the roast AND hops.

I have tried quite few for rating purposes but I never went back to any of them. I must say I enjoyed them but I guess not my style.

For me, Dubhe starts out great, but it has a lingering bitterness at the end that doesn't seem balanced out - at least in the bottle I had. Also, gotta say Wookey Jack is super awesome.
