I have been searching for a nice ruby red porter that does not have chocolate or coffee flavors. Does one exists?

The perception of roasted malts as having a coffee or chocolate aroma (if not taste) does not mean the beer actually does contain coffee/chocolate.

I like Summit Great Northern Porter as a quite good porter without flavoring adjuncts. Don't know if you can get it out your way. There are plenty of others.

If it doesn't taste like chocolate or coffee, it's probably not much of a porter then. If you're looking for darker beers that have less of the roasted character, english brown ales might be more your style.

Do you mean added chocolate or coffee? or just flavor overtones?

    Recommends in New England:
    - Coal Porter, Atlantic Brewing, ME
    - Any porter from Willimantic
    - Drayman's Porter from BBC

Stone Smoked Porter. No coffee or chocolate in the ingredients or perceived in flavor (in my opinion). Just smoky toasted malty goodness with a touch of bitter hop.

You might like to try a Bock, this is the time of year they show up on the market! A tasty dark beer with many lovers, myself among them.

Founders porter and Sierra Nevada porter are my go to's, i don't think either have added flavors.

I personally really like back east brewing companies porter, this definitely does not have any coffee or chocolate additions.

Unfortunately, I bought a 6 pack of the Back East Brewery Porter. It tasted like a chocolate stout to me and they mention chocolate and caramel on the can and on their website.

I used to work in the tap room and help around the brewery, so unless they changed the recipe it does not have any of that in there. On the can it mentions hints of chocolate and caramel, not that they include it.

I just realized you said flavors and not ingredients. I am an idiot, my fault.

Left hand's black jack porter is pretty good (although I am not sure if coffee and/or chocolate is an ingredient). It reminds me of Samuel Smith's Taddy porter.

    1) What's a "ruby red" porter?

    2) While there are plenty of porters without the addition of chocolate and coffee, you're going to have a hard time finding one that doesn't impart the flavors of chocolate and coffee, because the roasted malts that are a key ingredient in most porters commonly impart those flavor profiles.

I thought porters were typically either brown porter or robust porter. What's a ruby red porter OP?

The original post states "flavors" so I don't think the OP means actual chocolate or coffee.

    Moving onto flavors....

BJCP guidelines (FW they are worth) seem to suggest that while chocolate is optional, at east a mild roast character is needed in a porter. But it also suggests that "coffee" is an optional secondary flavor. So, according to the BJCP, a porter can lack both flavors provided you accept that there is a difference between the flavor of mild roast and of coffee. Now if the OP doesn't even want a mild roast character (or gets exhausted trying to find the needle in the haystack that is a commercially made porter that doesn't exhibit the flavors of either chocolate or coffee) then I second the suggestion for drinking a brown ale instead.

"Porter Flavor: Malt flavor includes a mild to moderate roastiness (frequently with a chocolate character) and often a significant caramel, nutty, and/or toffee character. May have other secondary flavors such as coffee, licorice, biscuits or toast in support. Should not have a significant black malt character (acrid, burnt, or harsh roasted flavors), although small amounts may contribute a bitter chocolate complexity. English hop flavor moderate to none. Medium-low to medium hop bitterness will vary the balance from slightly malty to slightly bitter. Usually fairly well attenuated, although somewhat sweet versions exist. Diacetyl should be moderately low to none. Moderate to low fruity esters.

What flavors are you looking for in a porter?
