This is something I've always wondered. Does beer age well in cans or over time will the can distort and ruin the beer?

I have enjoyed some Ten FIDY with some age on it, absolutely delicious. Although my experience is limited, at this point I am not hesitating to say cans can age very well.

Other than Ten Fidy, most canned beers are not the type you would age.

I asked this question in a thread a while back. Turns out we basically have one example in TenFidy on the effects of aging in cans. There are more beers out now that are age worthy but it will be a while till we know.

I would imagine they age better, as the likelihood of light and oxygen exposure is less than that of bottled beers. I don't have any examples or data to support such claims, just an assumption.

Of course, there's always the conversation about BPA linings in cans and the effects on people, but that's a whole other discussion, one which I am not sure who to believe truthfully. I just mention it because perhaps there is research about longer exposure to BPA linings causing or not causing specific risks. Again, I have no clue, but I figured it'd be worth mentioning.

Ditto.. Except mine are from 2010. I popped one in April and it was absolutely amazing. It sucks that I only have 3 left. :slight_frown:

Ten Fidy, Southern Star Old Potentate, Aviator tripel and Anderson Valley Oatmeal Stout are the only ones I can think of. I'm sure there's more though.

Just opened a can of 2012 Ten FIDY and it was great. Mind you, I've never had it fresh, but should be able to this year since we started getting Oscar Blues for a little while now (less than a year I THINK - don't quote me on that).

As others eluded to.. probably not enough of a sample size to make an assessment.

Also, Barleywines/Old Ales in a can just seems wrong.

    Sours, maybe?

No, thought someone on BA said it leaches BPA into the beer over time, and that it tasted like metal. Can't remember for sure, but I think he was talking about Tenfidy.

Been wondering about tossing a four pack of those in the cellar. Thanks for the info.

I just had a Ten Fidy that was less than 20 days old. I absolutely loved it. Everyone was saying that I need to age it about a year for more of the chocolate to come out.

The we all know is that whether its 4 days old or 4 years old, it's an amazing beer

I recently tasted a cellared can of Ten Fidy. Lackluster compared to fresh. It was brewed in 2011. I bought it a year ago.

I tried a three year vertical of Ten Fidy several years ago and could not detect any difference among the three. Cans nowadays won't ruin your beer because they are lined, but my experience has been that they preserve the contents better than they age...up to three years anyway.

One of my local breweries has canned their Barleywine and a Barrel Aged RIS. Both were super tasty... I've opened some with "months" not years and the only variance I have noticed is the hops fall back slightly on the BW.

That said, most if not all canned beers are going to be filtered and carbonated so there shouldn't be much in the way of aging due to yeast presence.

cans are like mini kegs. the can is completely impervious to light and it should also be air tight or damn close to it so beer in a can will age slowly and very gracefully.

We've had good luck in cellaring some 21st Amendment 'Allies Win the War'. I would imagine that their 'Lower the Boom' would be a great contender to age as well.
